I need to get my wisdom teeth pulled soon, and I am thinking about possibly having it done at one of the nearby medical schools(or maybe even far away if it would be worth it)

I am mostly worried about

a. quality of work
b. what if something goes wrong

I can handle it taking a long time, travel, having to work around their schedule, etc... that is OK. I just want to know what the "gotchas" are if there are any, and what I need to look out for.

Note: having it done at a normal oral surgeon won't break me, but it sure would help if I could have it done for less than 2k-3k or so.

Aren't wisdom teeth pullings done by orthodontists?

In my experience, it depends on how compacted (if at all) they are. A regular dentist can typically extract a fully exposed wisdom tooth.

to my understanding, orthodontists do braces and fix: oral surgeons remove wisdom teeth. One of mine is fully out, the other partially out, and the other 2 are fully covered.

I had my wisdom teeth out way back in the day. The quality of the work is usually excellent, as it is done under the on-site supervision of a teaching dentist, who comes by to check.

If something somehow went wrong, I imagine the teaching dentist would step right in.

It DOES cost in terms of your time and trouble, though. What would take just one appt. usually takes at least two or more, and is scheduled at their convenience, not yours -- PLUS you wait while there so the total time is FAR longer for each visit.

If your personal time is not yet economically valuable enough, though, the trade-off of time for money saved does work.

LOL, yes... I make less than 10.00 an hour right now...

If you count going to basic training in San Diego and having my wisdom teeth pulled by a Dental Tech Trainee (because the Navy's DT school was located in San Diego) then I guess I qualify. I won't say much for the surroundings or their bedside manner. Recovery was 24hrs SiQ.

Oral surgeon! 😉

(orthopedic = back, neck, stuff like that doctor).

I haven't personally, but I have had several relatives who have. Sometimes the work is a little lacking, but overall they do an excellent job. The problem isn't with the people doing the work, or the jobs they do, but with getting an appointment in the first place. Many places have long waiting lists or do means-testing.

I went to Loma Linda Dental school for some root canal work. There was a more seasoned dentist there supervising the endodondist. I didn't feel any pain or other wise since i was numbed up, so I think you should be fine.
