Who here has fired (I meant FRIED) their Duron - and how did it happen?

I fired a Duron tonight simply because the warranty label ran across one of the rubber pads and seems to have held the heatsink off the cpu. Grrrr. I hope AMD takes RMA's, I find it hard to believe such a stupid thing could happen.

I'd like to hear how you fellow Anandtechers have fried Durons, Thunderbirds, Coppermines, and Celerons. If you've legitimately have destroyed a cpu I'd like to hear. Perhaps there is a common bond between alot of us and we'll find that AMD and Intel need to redesign their chips. Perhaps we'll only find a commonality of ignorance. Whatever we find, if we don't all tell our story then nobody will ever know.

I think the title would make more sense if it said fried ;)

My Slot A is still going strong - no burnt silicon yet.

I thought I fried an old Celeron (366 @ 550) while demonstrating to about 50 people how to put a computer together at a workshop. I accidentally put the thing in the wrong way (socket370), dont know how I did it because its not suppose to "snap" in when in the wrong way, but i must have forced it. Anyway, i didnt notice it (in a hurry i guess) and tried to fire up the system... nothing. I then said what the hell is going on? I thought maybe the power cable was loose or something, I tried to start it up, again. After about 20-30 seconds, a few people (including myself) started to smell something... something burning (you know the smell). I quickly shut it down, took out the chip, and put it back in the right way... luckly it worked.

I haven't but a friend of mine just smoked one last week. He wasn't careful with the heatsink installation. He had it on crooked so that the edge of the sink was on the part of the socket where the lever mechanism is. that lifted the heatsink just enough to create a couple mil gap between the sink and the core. A few seconds after he fired it you could smell it burning.

Almost fried the replacement tonight! Stuck it in but forgot to put the fan plug into the header!!!!!!!!

To make a long story short I walked by and noticed it stuck on "Its now safe to shut down the machine". All sorts of garbage all over the screen. Touched the heatsink. 3rd degree burn! YEEEEEEEooooww!!!!

Shut down. Blew air over the heatsink. Waited ten minutes. It still works!! Phew.

Morale of the story: If she is hot then don't just blindly turn her off and pull the heatsink. Get cool air over the heatsink ASAP and leave the heatsink on. There is a good chance that your "C-P-R" on the heatsink alone will cool the rig down substantially enough to save your investment.

there's a guy in the o/c forum that said that he booted his T'bird without a heatsink and all of a sudden his computer would not work nor boot, so after a time while the computer was running without a heatsink he touched the cpu core and to his suprise it was cold it was not hot at all.

when i first got my duron, i put on a pep66 with the pads on both the pep, and the duron chip. i booted up into windows, windows frooze up on me, i got the motherboard beeping code saying that cpu is too hot. i then started to smell this rubber like smell, touched the cpu and almost got third degree burns!
