Thinking of getting an IBM laptop (T-Series, Pentium M 1.70GHz with 512MBRAM), so I wanted to hear your thoughts on it. I'm getting the T42 (2378FZU) with 1.7GHz M CPU, 512MBRAM (will put in more memory later, IBM wants $700 more for 1.5GB RAM) and 15.0" XGA Display.

The only thing that I don't like about it is the screen. The max resolution is 1024x768  That's quite odd cause my 4 year old HP had 1024x768 as well. Are all laptops like this? I mean there has to be one with better resolution.

I'd go with 14'' or even 12''. I have no complaint about my R-series, except weight. I'd gladly trade screen size for light-weight.

Wrong forum. There is a SFF/notebook forum for this.

Never knew there was one. Oh well.

Obviously.

RossMAN asked me why I got a powerbook instead of an IBM T42. If I was in the market for an x86 based notebook, the T42 looked almost perfect.

If you look on the IBM site you will see that they offer screens ranging from 1024x768 all the way up to 1600x1200.
My T41 has a 1400x1050 resolution and this T42p has a 1600x1200 screen.

I mean it was fairly easy to look this up, I suggest you spend more time looking through the IBM website before making your purchase.

Also, how are you a lifer and not know there is a SFF/Notebook forum on Anandtech?

Hmm. Maybe I should call and talk to a CSR.
I tried to customize it but it gave me no choice to customize the screen :(

Certain model numbers such as yours, cannot upgrade screens and video cards. You have to find a base unit with the screen and video card that you want and go from there. Thats just how IBM does things.

Cool, thanks. It's 5:00AM, maybe I need to sleep :)

The only thing I don't like is that it's slow... T20 here (work laptop can't complain I guess). :D I'm itching for IBM to finally come-out with a Tablet PC... that's what I really want.

FYI, a pal has a smokin' T41something (not sure exactly what) which seems to game pretty well.

I Have a ThinkPad 760XL that was purchased way back in 1996 and it still works like a charm. The original batter still holds a charge. :)

The only thing I don't like about the thinkpad is the keyboard layout. On my T30 the F1 key under the ESC key is an awful spot. Also, the arrow keys have a pageforward/backwards button to each side of the up arrow which also is awful spot. Anyway, those are minor issues that I've learned to workaround. Operation wise it works well. I suggest purchasing an extra warranty, especially if it covers batteries. My T30 has needed a few things replaced (HDD and Systemboard). And the battery is about due...

I own a 800MHz IBM T40 and it pisses me off. Only because it was a pass-me-down from a previous grad student who recharged that battery like a mofo and now it has a 0 second battery life. I'm graduating in 3 months so I figure there's no need to order a new battery. I'll let the next grad student suffer.
