A cousin of mine died long ago from AIDS related causes. In the 70s he was a heroin user and in the 80s, when they gave AIDS a name, it was too late for him. No cocktails in the late 80s when he died. Sad thing is he was clean for over 10 years. Had a wife, kid and a GF after the divorce, thank GOD none of them contracted it.

So, does anyone here have AIDS? Does it itch? Do you think Steve Jobs might secretly be an AIDS sufferer? I heard Jobs might be in the hospital again, with Apple reporting that he is getting "extra special care." Man, if Apple were a person, she'd be a douche.

This snow is pissing me off today, at least it's raining now.

you dont catch AIDS... AIDS isnt a disease.
HIV is the disease. HIV infected indivuals my develop AIDS in its the late stages of the disease infection. People with AIDS usually die within a few months to a year. People with HIV may live 20 years before they develop AIDS. AIDS is the term meaning "Immuno Compromised as a result of HIV infection."

People really need to learn to make this dinstinction.

You seem to be very well informed there buddy...

I just don't believe this.

HIV Transmission Rates in the US

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 1.1 million persons are living with HIV in the United States (2006).

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html - 299,398,484 people in the US (2006).

That is nearly 0.37%, or 1 in every 272 people.

This. It's more like 0.3% overall. And if you break it down by sexual orientation (hetero) it's even lower than that... about .15%... and if you break it down even further to exclude intravenous drug users it falls to about .1%... and if you eliminate the heterosexual people who engage in high-risk sexual activity, (meaning you're left with straight people who don't share needles and don't bare-back the last chick left in the bar every weekend)... there are some who have it but it's statistically as close to zero as you're going to get.

I wasnt quoting any direct known statistic. The OP claims that 1 in 10 had AIDS... that isnt possible unless > 1 in 10 has HIV, since the ratio of HIV to AIDS is in the factor of 1/100th in the US.

VERY STUPID QUESTION: But, can you have AIDS without HIV?

Even moreso I'd say the victims were adults and kids who were hemophiliacs and got the disease from blood transfusions courtesy of infected donors. Or anyone who received infected blood for that matter.

no.
you are not considered to have AIDS until the HIV virus has reduced your CD4+ (Helper T cells + macrophages+ monocytes) to less than 200 per micro-liter of blood.
HIV also destroy B lymphocyte cells, but they are not counted in the CD4+ count.

Normal CD4+ counts would be in the range of 600 to 1500.

Not true.

AIDS is a syndrome (what the "S" stands for), and is caused by a virus that can be transmitted through any body fluids. Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk (I'm not sure about saliva, urine, or tears, but would avoid them with an HIV positive person just in case).

Per wikipedia about .6% of the world has HIV, and saliva, tears, and urine contain the virus but unlikely to transmit the virus.

what i find fascinating is there are reported cases of "natural immunity" to HIV.
There arent that many, but in one such case, a bone marrow transplant may have completely cured another HIV patient.

No. You can get something similar where your immune system shuts down and you can very similar symptoms of opportunistic infections etc but the pathophysiology would be different.

2/10 troll

I dunno, the "super scientific never inaccurate ATOT poll of atot members who never lie" says that 19/134 voters have it. That's 12.42% not so far from 10% Vindication for the OP ... you decide.
