tastes too bad for me to eat... for me to get away from jasmine rice

i think jasmine is plenty healthy.. its not anologous to wheat bread vs processed white bread

It is healthier, in the regard that brown rice is lower in calories and carbs and higher in fiber. But long-grain rice, such as jasmine, is still pretty healthy, and actually has more protein and thiamin than brown rice.

I think as much of the appeal is the taste. It's got its own flavor which I've come to prefer. In that regard, it is kind of like wheat vs white breads. Both are good, though.

hrm I had always assume any kind of white rice is not as healthy as brown rice simply because the carbs come from different areas (brown rice is more of a complex carb than white rice to my knowledge).

but that's not the case with Jasmine? jasmine is the only kind of white rice i really eat.

Some sort of basmati rice. A little olive oil, some cumin, ground cloves, maybe a little saffron and ginger. Mix it up, throw in rice and let it brown. Add water and salt to taste. Cover, turn to low, and let it cook until tender. uncover, add in a little more oil, stir, and leave on low for a while, allowing the bottom to brown some more. Finished, mix it all up. yay.

Brown is healthier, but the difference isn't all that great. Brown does have the benfefit of some more nutrients, but white rice (long grained, anyway) isn't terribly unhealthy. The health benefits of brown are probably more pronunced when compared to short-grain, which is quite a bit starchier and therefore more "sticky" and higher in carbs. Brown arguably isn't the heathiest variety out there, but it is able to be replace white rice in many dishes fairly easily, has an appealing taste, and it's not much more expensive.

About 2 years ago I learned how to cook white rice the spanish way. And let me tell you, spanish rice is tons better than the normal steamed white rice crap. I also didn't know about the type of rice used (Jasmine) in the spanish rice my girlfriends family cooked, but once I learned I cooked it constantly. It's much different than just steaming the rice.

So since I'm trying to get cutup, I decided to learn how to cook brown rice and tried cooking it. First time it was not that great as I didn't realize you had to let it stay in the water much longer than white rice.

2nd time was pretty good becase I let it cook for the proper amount of time.

But last night, man oh man, I made some GOOD brown rice! All I did was add in about a half cup of chicken broth when I went to fill the pot up with water. I did it 2 more times as well (because I had to fill the pot 2 more times to let it cook longer to soften it up) and when it came out in the end ... holy crap it was awesome!

I was talking to one of my friends and she told me that her boyfriend puts beans in his as well, so this is making me wonder what else I can add into it to make it taste even better. Anyone have any recipies?

EDIT:

oh yah, I also put a bunch of sliced onions in the rice as well, and I heat that up in the pot with a TINY bit of olive oil for about 10 minutes before, lightly "frying" it per se. Then I add in the rice grains and I cook it without water in the pot while moving it around constantly, until the rice is starting to get even darker. THEN that's when I start adding the water and I pour in some salt.

What you are making is Pelaf and I do it just like you. You can fry anything to the point of browning then boil the rice on top of it. I pretty much just nose around in the pantry or fridge and throw in anything that strikes my fancy. Mushrooms, celery, peppers, nuts, fine egg nooddles, etc.

For a quick accompaniment for a dish when I'm not in a creative mood, just boiling brown rice and then splashing over a bit of dark soy sauce once on the plate is fantastic. Works really well with salmon and vegetables.

I eat fried rice that is sort of brown. I don't know the recipe 'cause I buy it already cooked from the local chinese restaurant.

Brown Rice is delicious alone, so you can add anything you like to it and still be a winner!
