I know a number of folks here in the Boston area that have sold their cars and now use Zipcar.

Those not familiar with it, Zipcar is a service that allows you to rent cars by the hour(includes gas, insurance). You can reserve cars online with their locations(usually a car can be found every several blocks). With a Zipcard, a wave of the card unlocks the car.

By Some Estimates, there are 600 mil cars on the road, lets say 700 mil. World's population is ~ 7 bil. A good a 66% would be adults how travel ~4500 mil. so roughly 1 in every 6.5 ppl have a car thats roughly 16%. I said 20% earlier... even by most liberal calculations, I don't think its more than 20%.

I don't like being without transportation. You can pry my keys from my cold, dead hands.

Nobody is trying to take your car away Nancy.

I was commuting 10 miles by bike 2-3 times a week when I worked closer to home. Most I did was 4 days straight once. That was tough and I sure was tired by the end of the week. It is pretty hilly here so my commute wasn't just a flat 10 mile ride one way.

It's a lifestyle change for sure.

I was going to say "don't own one," then realized that I do own a car... :hmm:

I didn't really drive when I was in Chicago, and it was debatable that I really had a car that I owned (just ask K1052 or Platypus), as it was mostly abandoned for several months at a time. then got rid of it.

Need one living in the Bay Area, though. (but probably not if I were in SF)

 If they expanded this out where I live (pretty spotty coverage currently), I'd probably sell my car and get a membership.

My car is in the shop and my motorcycle has a fuel pump issue that started after I dropped my car off. I took the bus for the first time in my life yesterday, and again this morning. It wasn't bad at all.

I've been car-light for the past 2 years. I'll bike the 8 miles into work most days but keep the truck for recreation, transportation of large loads, and as a back up for bad weather. Going car free would be a little too much of a commitment right now. I'd consider it if there was a zipcar-like service around here (Northern CA).

Okay, but you definitely didn't own one at that age either.

While this much is true, I had essentially unfettered access to the family vehicles. I also bought, registered, and insured (through my parents policy) a brand new snowmobile the day I turned 14. Granted, it's not the same thing but I definitely realized the implications of owning and maintaining a vehicle. The same realization occurred when I bought my truck 3 years later.

I sold my car in September. I cant lie, I miss it dearly.

I take bus to college one hour there and back, having a video ipod and all my favorite TV shows sure pass the time quickly. I've saved so much money though, I think it was worth it.

I go out less, I spend less.. mostly because I simply don't want to take the time on a bus to get there. But I must say it's helped save a ton of cash.

Never owned a car. Living in NYC makes it easy but I lived in upstate NY for a year without one (+ four more years if you count college). In NYC, there's little incentive for owning a car, and plenty of negatives (ever heard of alternate side parking?). If you need one from time to time, Zip Car is where it's at.

You are saying that 80 hilly miles per week was tough? YOU? I'm disappointed!

Forgot to mention before, in good weather, when not having other commitments that preclude a bike, I usually ride 25-30 miles RT five days per week for my job. Sure, it's not hilly but don't tell me NYC streets are an easy ride. ;)

I would love to not have to rely on a car for daily activities. The wife and I would still need one car to do things outside of our usual routine (like go up to the mountains). For groceries and work commute, typical entertainment, I'd love to be able to ditch regular use of our cars. As it is, we're way too far away from stuff and public transportation is way too piss poor to make it feasible.
