I need to "Do a survey of 5-10 female and male college students. Ask them if they consider themselves feminists. Why or why not? Ask them to describe feminists and feminism. Where did they get their ideas about feminism? What would a society without feminism look like?"

No, I do not consider myself a feminist. Why, because it is silly. I am a logical person who doesnt need to label myself with a silly title. Feminists? Well then, where do I begin. They are just like anyone else that needs a title to define themselves. I have no problems with women's movements or trying to better there position or even pushing for education and so on and so forth. More power to them. All calling yourself a feminist does is make an us and them. This just furthers the divide between everyone unnecessarily. Where do they get there ideas? I dunno, from the human will to succeed and better one's self. Also from a view that people should be equal. The whole we are feminist you arent is normal lameass stuff that happens in our society. Our society without feminist? Probably nothing different. It is excellent that the early women's lib people got women the rights they deserved. They are citizens and an overall outstanding gender who fully deserve the rights that everyone gets. Feminists as they are today are whiny and more or less useless.

Bumping this up for the work crows, I'm very appreciative of everyone who has taken the time to answer.

If anyone is out there that is older than college age that could chime in with an opinion I would appreciate it. Gotta get this written tonight. Feel free to pm me if you don't want to post in the thread.

Thanks again ATOT.

Thanks, I managed to get enough of the younger group, but no one older. Unfortunately it would have been easier to assume what people of my generation would answer, trying to guess what people who grew up in entirely different times will be harder. I might have to try to take a poll at work tomorrow and suffer the awkwardness and try to finish up on my lunch break.

Age: 40
Gender: M, hetero

Feminist? Yes

Why: I don't shave my legs or pits.

Feminists think that women are like people and like maybe like shouldn't be beat up by guys and like maybe should be free to live their lives freely w/o gender-based limitations imposed by law or social fuckedupedness.

A society w/o feminists would look like the Republican party, or a mirror.

I'd just like to interject - what is the definition given to "feminist" here?

Too often the term is associated with the extremists. Feminist simply means that you support equal rights for men and women. Based on that definition, I would consider myself a feminist. But I'm outside the age range.

The extremists are the ones that earn the bad rep, because of things like demanding that all men urinate sitting down because doing so standing up shows them to be somehow superior, or ridiculous things like that. (Wooo, look at me, I can direct my urine stream! I am SOO much better than you! There's something you do with people who get worked up at something like that. It's called "humoring them.") The extremists get the headlines, and then they proudly proclaim themselves as feminists.

To be honest that's part of the assignment, to just see how different people define feminism.

Do you fall in the middle of the age range or below it? It really wouldn't hurt to have a wider sample.

Except that that is a charicature of feminists created by misogynists, not any feminsts I have heard or read. A lot of that came in response to the push for the Equal Rights Amendment. Alot of BS was spewwed by the Jerry Falwell wing of the conservative movement in order to defeat the ERA. For those interested here is the text of that cursed, family-corrupting, America-destroying proposal:

"SECTION 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
"SEC. 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
"SEC. 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification."

That's it.

I am below the range - 24.

Wow. Damn dangerous stuff.
Women! Get back into the kitchen! While we're at it, stop all this foolish learning to read and wanting to vote. The great Falwell (and Friends) has spoken!!!!

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he would have opposed giving women the right to vote.

Or who knows, maybe the letter "x" just scares that sort of person.
"Psst! Hey! What kind of electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength of around 1 nanometer?"
"Um, I don't know."
"X-rays!"
"AAAAHHH! SINNER! DEVIL!!!!"
