rh71: There's an easy answer. One has a dual head card with a pair of monitors on it. The other has a card w/ TV out and is connected to the TV. Wanna guess which I watch movies on? :)

The router also acts as a firewall and is running a stripped down version of linux. It's kept me virus/worm free for years now.

Edit:
The 300K6-2 will probably go back to being stored in the top of my closet in a week or so.

My 1.0GHz serves as all of the above (including one-time web/ftp server). Not that I really care, but I don't see why you'd need another PC for any reason... unless it's occupied doing 12-hour dvd encodes.

I'm with you, except I have two PCs, my other one is my 24-hour web server (i cant use my regular PC since I reboot it often and like to leave it off while I sleep!)

I really don't the luxury of space to fit any spare PCs... small house :(

While the processor is slow what kind of speed can you pull data off that HD?

Also what kind of HD space are we talking about here.

More than enough speed to pull off the 33mbps required to mount a DVD over Daemon Tools and stream it realtime (Actually, you only need just a bit more than 10mbps for that). It runs NT4 at the moment - I'll be putting 2k on as soon as I can find my extra 256mb DIMM.

At the moment, it's got about 80gb between a 3 drives - the biggest being 60 gigs and the other two being for utility uses

I'm sure it's more than a hundred, but probably not quite two hundred.

The main workstations are dual Athlon 1.6s with 1.5G memory; I've gotten in some dual P4 Xeon 2.4GHz boards with 4G memory, but I haven't put those into service yet. Most of the newer servers are dual 1.1GHz or dual 850MHz PIII systems with 2G memory, but I still have a bunch of older systems including five dual 550MHz PIII Xeon servers and lots of dual-PII servers. I've got eight dual 297MHz Sun Ultra 2s with 2Gig memory, a pair of Tatung Ultrasparc 440MHz servers, some Ultra 5s, and a few 150MHz Ross Hypersparc powered Sparc 20s (one's a quad-processor). I've got far too many Sparc 4s, 5s, 10s, and 20s, stacks of older Intel-based computers in the garage, and a few dozen laptops, only four of which are in use right at the moment (monitoring the network, etc.). Of the big iron, the only machine still knocking around is the Sequent (the Vax 11/750 has gone away).

Though, if we're shooting for sheer numbers, maybe I should count each of the single-board computers in the Cubix boxes and in the two redundant-computing NetFrame systems. I'm not sure that would push me over two hundred, but it'd be close.

to all whom are nocking my old comps.. The nieghbor threw the 66mhz out to the trash because he could not get it to work.. so rather that put it in a land fill i took it as a challenge and fix .. I also took it as a challenge to network as many os's together as I could..

and one more thing I think of the old computers as classics with classic games and software.. just like a classic car.. the architecture alone makes it very challenging to work on these old machines.. take the 66mhz .. the cdrom connects to the sound card that connects to a risor card that connects to the mother board.. guess what no plug and play.. you half to manually make a startup disc by finding drivers and writing your own config.sys ect..

I am so bored with working on new computers and no brainer software.. so people think they know how to work on and build comps when everything is automatic just put in a os and everything takes care of itself practically.... wow that take true technical skill .. I have learn so much by fixing theses old comps.. i have probably forgot more that most know..

Then again, I can understand the above comment. It is coming from a person that is proud they were able to install windows on a Packard Bell.

6 currently on my network. Might add my 7th one of these days. When I have plans for at least 2 more machines when I get a job.

1. Old Dell POS pentium 133, 48mB ram, 2.4gB hard drive, OpenBSD 3.2: firewall
2. Athlon XP 1800+, 512mB ram, 36gB hard drive, OpenBSD 3.4 snapshot (might be running -current later): play server
3. Dual pentium 3 866, 512mB ram, 18gB hard drive, Debian testing: mysql server
4. Sun Microsystems Ultra-10 UltraSPARC 2 440, 128mB ram, 40gB hard drive, OpenBSD 3.3 -stable: main NIDS and play server
5. POS HP laptop, AMD K6-2(or 3) 450, 128mB ram, 4gB hard drive, Win2k: friend's laptop, he has my 600mhz p3 Dell Inspiron :(
6. iBook Dual USB 500, 384mB ram, 10gB hard drive, Mac OS X 10.1.5: mail, browsing, ssh, vnc, etc

Soon, maybe:
7. Sun SPARCstation 10 SPARC4m 36mhz, 32mB ram, 1gB hard drive, OpenBSD something (3.0 when I last used it I think): No clue what this one will really do, it can't do much. Maybe I should upgrade it when I get cash...

I need a fileserver and a desktop machine. I wouldn't mind a new Mac one of these days either...

My friend has a LOT of freaking computers in his basement, I'll list what I can remember:

(2) AMD 2100+ Servers
Self-Built AMD 2500+ on Windows XP
Self-Built AMD 1700+ on Linux
Self-Built AMD 1700+ on Windows XP
Sony Vaio Laptop
Older Compaq Laptop
Dell P2 (not really sure what's in it)
Celeron system from some small computer store brand.
PeoplePC P3 800mhz
(4) Apple IIe's
(2) Apple IIc's
Mac G3
(2) Imacs
Ancient IBM System (no idea what's in it)
Tandy system (again, no idea what's in it)
Work Laptop (not sure what it is)
Xbox
PS2

I think that's it for whole systems, he's got a crapload of parts and gutted systems in addition to these, especially old Apples, which is how he pieced the working systems together, kind of his hobby I guess, old Apples.
