Who has the Canon SD110? Do you like it?

Considering purchasing this. I want a camera to take on my trip to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka. I want to take alot of shots, but don't want the bulk of my Canon Rebel, nor do I want to have to deal with rolls of film. I'm not going on this trip as a photo expedition, so I don't mind sacrificing some picture quality (my Rebel would take some KILLER pictures with my various lenses). This is a post-BAR trip for me and my 5 friends.

What are your opinions? Experiences? Tips?

If I buy this, I'll buy two 256mb SD cards. That should be enough for a 2 month trip, right?

If you want a small digital camera, get a Canon S400/410. Great camera, my roommate took a lot of pictures with it this summer and they were all great. It even has a panorama mode that helps you take panoramic pictures that software can later stitch together more easily. That feature works really well.

I have the Canon sd100, the 3.2 megapixel one, and I love the camera. I read reviews before buying it and chose Canon because their picture quality is great. If you compare a Canon 3.2 Megapixel camera to other 3.2 Megapixel cameras, generally I've heard that the Canon pictures will come out best.

Some other great advice is to buy an extra battery or two. I bought some cheap off brand one and it only lasts about half as long as original canon battery. But the price was about 1/5 of the canon battery. You can make the call but if I had the money I'd probably buy the canon brand.

I don't know how many pictures you plan on taking or what kind of size and quality pics you want. On Superfine quality (the one I'd recommend) with 1024x768 size, my sd100 gets 428 pictures with the 256mb card. Personally I'd take 1600x1200 size pictures.

Number of pictures I get on 256mb card.
Superfine: (like I said, I wouldn't use anything but Superfine)
2048x1536 - 153 pics
1600x1200 - 245
1024x768 - 428
640x480 - 960

Fine:
2048x1536 - 274 pics
1600x1200 - 437
1024x768 - 755
640x480 - 1568

Normal:
2048x1536 - 545 pics
1600x1200 - 866
1024x768 - 1392
640x480 - 2694

I have the SD110 and I really like it.

It's tiny, of course, and that's perfect for me, I did not want something bulky that I had to lug around.
The pictures it takes are fine.

I really want the SD410 for an upcoming trip, but I've heard that the proprietary battery pack on the SD series is lackluster. Since you can't use regular batteries it seems it would be required that you buy another of their battery packs if you require heavy use, and that's another $40.

Anyway, just a thought. I might go for the A80 simply because I can use regular batteries if necessary.

That's what I love about my Canon PowerShot A40 is it accepts 4 regular AA batteries.

Rechargeable NiMH's are affordable and abundant.

Did I get ripped?


I decided to get the SD110. I purchased at amazon for$254. I could get it cheaper, but I'm leaving monday and needed it ASAP, and Amazon guaranteed a friday delivery for $10.

If you're gonna be travelling and taking pictures throughout the day, you definetley need at least one extra battery pack.

While your travelling, will you have any way to unload pictures from the camera? If not, then I would recommend taking at least two 512mb memory cards with you.

Here are some random pictures. Sorry I don't have more but my SD100 is relatively new. All my other pictures were taken with a Canon Powershot G1...another great but large camera.

Ripped? No, not really.

Amazon.com does have Viking 256MB SD for $23.04 after $20 MIR with free shipping.

Oh sh1t. two 512mb?!

No, I don't have a way to unload pictures. But i thought 2 256mb would be good enough! For the first month I'm not sure about computer access, but for the second month I will have access, so do you think that I can not worry about running out of space? I'm not one of those people taking constant shots. Maybe 10 a day AT MOST.

Judging by Gotensan1's stats above, I should be fine, right, even using Superfine and 1600x1200?

I was tempted to go for the Nikon coolpix 3700 since they are offering a $100 manufacturer's rebate, but I have read that the SD110 is INCREDIBLY sturdy, and the SD110 is definitely smaller. The design looks so, so cool. And it seems to be perfect for what I want, a point-and-shoot. I don't plan to have pictures that compare to my Rebel with a 50mm prime lens - damn, now those are TACK SHARP images.

Is there any manual focus at all with the SD110?

By the way, how long does the battery last? Will I be able to charge overnight, and then enjoy a full day's worth of shooting? Again, I don't plan to take more than 10 to 15 pics at the most a day.

EDIT: and is there a way to shoot my pics onto an iPOD directly? I will be having that around, so maybe I can make use of that?

3gen?

If so look into either the Belkin card reader or USB adapter. Both are around $50 if you use a coupon. The card reader is slower and the batteries (both the reader and iPod batteries) will barely last 1GB. The USB adapter you use the USB cable to connect directly to your camera, it's faster and will download 2.5GB per charge. Coupon thread

The battery will last you atleast one day's worth of shooting. But there are other factors that matter. If you don't use the LCD as a viewfinder, your battery will last a lot longer. I use the LCD all the time and I think you can take quite a few pictures...I'd think at least 40. It can probably take a bunch more.

I don't know if you've used a digital camera before, here's some tips:

If turning auto-flash off, you have to hold the camera very still. This is because the lens has to stay open longer to let more light in. This causes small movements to create blurry images. When auto-flash is on, the camera adjusts to let in the right amount of light with a fast shutter speed.

If using digital zoom, you basically have to use a tripod or some sort of holding device. The picture quality is even more sensitive to movements.
