if it was anything but a TV, I'd agree. Seeing as how I'm spending 2 to 3k, and I plan on keeping the tv for around 3 years, I figured it might be a good investment. I'm open to dissenting opinions though, so please share :)

The coverage is vastly different. Either way, make an informed decision and read the brocure thingy on what is covered and what is not. I am pretty sure the sears one covers everything except abuse, theft and probably acts of god. (lightning and stuff) but the Best buy ones that I purcahsed (2 IIRC) had about a billion limitations after the OEM's warranty ran out, and they required you to bring the product to the store, while I am pretty sure sears sends someone out to fix it in your house.

looks like sears is pulling ahead. I did notice sears is more expensive. I just went to get a camera for my mom, They charge $80 for a canon S2 IS I bought for $159. Then I went across the street to Officemax and bought an hp R707 for $75 and the plan was only $14. I guess they don't ask questions at sears. It's worth it if the user is clueless and/or clumsy.

In most cases I get the item at a good enough deal where even if it breaks down, I can sell the broken item on ebay for at least 75% of what I paid for it, considering I upgrade every six months anyway.

I had two of the color guns go out on my projection TV after two years. Parts and labor would have been over $600. I paid $300 for the warranty.

It more than paid for itself.

I try to buy everything with my Amex since they add a year of warranty for free.

I work/worked for Sears. You will definitely pay for the warranty plan but it does cover more than any of the other places. It covers cosmetic as well as internal parts and they will often repair things that were due to user neglect. Other companies are a extension of the manufacturers warranty.

Some of the bigger things in the Sears warranty:

1. Anything goes wrong with the set, it will be fixed at your home(for large items)

2. You will get a replacement if they have to take it in to service it.

3. If they can't fix it you will get a new TV/whatever you bought

4. Covers "acts of god"

5. Big one: Covers DLP/LCD RP bulbs. If you have to replace one of these the warranty almost pays for itself.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, if you are wondering anything specific I should be able to answer it
