Ugh... this reminds me of some of the idiocy I run into down here. We have some really bad intersections that are probably in need of a traffic light because they're simply not easy to get through. One problem is that people love to put their car into an intersection.

There are a few problems here. If you're in the north-bound left-turn lane, you cannot see cars in the south-bound lane if someone is in the south-bound left-turn lane... it's just a really bad angle. Then, you have people from the strip mall on the right that want to turn into the south-bound lane... these drivers put their car into the area between the north and south-bound lanes, so the person in the left-turn lane on the north-bound side cannot turn left (the car is in the way).

Ugh, it pisses me off every time :|.

As a rule of thumb, if your proceeding forward will cut off another driver, you don't. If one guy wants to go straight and another wants to turn and they both got there at the same time, the dude who wants to go straight should go first.

It's the same reason you might be able to turn right onto a two-way after stopping at a red light but cannot turn left: you'd be cutting off the left-going-right traffic. I may not be explaining it as well as my driver's ed teacher did, but I get it so that's all that matters to me

If you have to put your car into the path of another vehicle, the other vehicle has right of way. In your instance it's best if the drivers make eye contact and make a visual signal with hands. If I believed they got there before me I'd wave them on as I'm doing them a favor by making their turn easier.

The left turner is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to right of way unless they are already in the intersection. This is why when you're turning left on a green light two way highway pull out into the intersection. Once you are in the intersection you have right of way from cross traffic if the light changes but still must yield to those going straight.
