well i would say either pc or a console, but since almost every regular person today has a phone that has a game in it, even if it's as simple as snake, i'd say mobile phones. although they're just casual games, those games are still likelier to be played compared to Mario Kart on Wii or Battlefield 1 on PC

we've never had a definition of gamer, which is why all these stupid threads and articles pop up every now and then in mainstream media when they think they are edgy.

so, *pulls up shirt sleeves*

a gamer is not someone who plays or uses toys. practically everyone does this. out of a number of people who use a game for fun, a smaller number will be a "gamer". it clearly means someone who doesn't .. well .. game .. like the rest of us. The concept is someone who takes games seriously even over the fun.

Now that we have that out of the way, let's completely ignore this asshat definition and look at what "gamer' means today. A gamer is someone whose principal toys are videogames. Videogames are their "this is what i like to do".
It doesn't imply anymore that they take the game seriously, doesn't have any 1337 aspects to it, it's just that kind of person who "i finished GAME yesterday, now i go to store and buy GAME". It's their primary hobby.

Consoles have by far more gamers than PC. You can have PC people who are into eSports but they no longer represent the paradigm of a gamer. Look at most Quake champions and you'll see they never branch out into any other eSport. Well, i mean, there is the Overwatch cash grab now, but these are still people who are fixated on ONE thing and not on games as a broad medium.
As an example, you won't find a chess GM who dedicates himself with the same zeal to a game of Risk.

Mobile gaming doesn't really give a player the option to dedicate themselves to the medium. Games tend to be short, easy to beat, and with dodgy controls. More than games, they fall into the category of "toys".
Console games on the other hand have decently reliable controls and games can be challenging. And console users can pretty much ONLY game on their machine.
PC players can truly dedicate themselves to some eSports due to the superior controls and efficiency of the platform, but are also less likely to spend all their time on games alone, and to have a broader spectrum of media; from my experience, PC users do tend to gravitate towards a genre or another of game.

So, there. Pick your preferred definition of gamer and you have the platform most gamed on. Toys = mobile, Games = console, eSports = PC.

Also, quoting everyone:

PC gamer: "don't call console players GAMERS, they are not true gamers"
Console gamer: "don't call mobile players GAMERS, they are not true gamers"
Mobile gamer: "oh look i can break the pretty candy"

Theres like 2 billion people on WoW, so that might be the winner.

But I think there's also about a billion Japanese girls with gameboys playing Pokemon.

On the other hand, every human on the planet has tried Pokemon Go at least once, so I think my final answer is Blackberry.

I'd wager consoles, at least in the US. Certainly more accessible and cost effective from an end-user perspective.

Every single person with a smart phone is a mobile gamer.
My wife, oldest daughter and I don't have one single game on our phones. Yes, seriously. Even with two kids, I only have an old original Nintendo Wii system that never gets used. I don't think I have all the parts anymore.
However the youngest does play Minecraft on PC or on phone if with friends 50/50. Oldest daughter and my wife don't play anything. I'll occasionally play old PC games. CivIV, Settlers type. We were always much more into the PC games. Her and I would sit together to do Myst etc.

In Response to the above post - this is pretty much how you know what platform you should be using...

If you look like this - you should be a PC gamer:

This is what typical console players look like:

And here is your typical mobile gamer:

LOL.

I'd say, currently, that mobile has the most gamers. Followed by console and then PC. Just a guess. That infographic posted above by SKORPIO has results that I'd not expect, at all. I wonder what source(s) were used and how they came up with that.

When I think of "Gamer" I think of it in an extreme sense. Someone that wants to win. Someone that plays on a very regular basis.... and the majority of console players simply aren't that,. They don't play to win - they play to pass the time.

When I gamed in my early years between ages 13-20, I had to fucking win. If I didn't win I would likely take it on something. I mean to put it simply - the only games I would ever play are games that I felt I could someday be the top player at.

When it came to Consoles, I had to beat Goldeneye 64 on the super hard mode. Same goes for StarFox 64 while unlocking everything - as well as getting all optional quests in games like Zelda Link to the Past

When It came to PC Games, when I finally quit World of Warcraft I was the most geared hunter on the server. No question. I topped the damage meters in our guild raids a lot of times, and I became exhalted with just about every faction for no reason other than I wanted it all.

That's what describes a gamer to me - and more often than not they reside on the PC. That doesn't mean they don't exist on console, but I think the majority of people that only play consoles do it much more casually - and I don't think they deserve the title "Gamer". Hell, I don't deserve that title either anymore since I just casually play DOTA 2 these days.

You are an addict.

You are an addict.

I also quit WoW cold turkey when a friend came to my dorm room door and said "Are you really going to stay in your room and play video games instead of going to the party?" I started realizing that trying to get laid was more important than raiding in prime time (7 - 10PM) 3-4 nights a week wasn't worth it anymore. Unsurprisingly, shortly after I also shredded 150 lbs

It's amazing what women make us do 😱
