Yet another music thread for us to argue about :)

Greatest singing voice in music history.

My nominations:
Ella Fitzgerald, just amazing.

I have a live version of her singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, but I can't find it on youtube, but it is pretty amazing.

Roy Orbison, maybe not the best voice, but certainly the most unique and distinguishing. How the hell does he make that sound??

Second link is from his last hit song "You Got It" Again, how does he make that sound? Amazing voice.

My last nomination: Aretha Franklin. Another amazing voice that can't be matched. The power in her voice is amazing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE41YPdPuis <-- think from Blues Brothers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DwZ-GMHyho <-- performing Nessun Dorma at the 1998 Grammy's. She was asked to fill in at the last moment and did an amazing job.

Ok, let the fighting begin.

Ella's real good, same with Nina Simone. You could easily say Chaka Khan and Etta James. Newer school definitely Chante Moore.

Rock - Steve Perry IMO.
POP/Soul easy Aretha Franklin #1. Elvis/Sam Cooke/Marvin Gaye, honorable mention.

I'm not really a vocal guy, and "greatest" leaves a lot of room for interpretation, but here's a few I like...

Frank Sinatra
Bobby Darin
Louis Armstrong
Howlin' Wolf

The few that I like, not in any particular order:
Male-
Freddy Mercury
Frank Sinatra
Steve Perry
Russell Hitchcock
Geddy Lee
Billy Joel (when he was younger)
Jimmy Page
etc...

Female-
Whitney Houston
Sarah Brightman
Barbara Streisand
Karen Carpenter
Alison Krauss
Jewl
and a few more that I don't remember.

Male: Sinatra
Female: very, very tough for me to say. For the balance of range and power, I would have to say Whitney Houston, though I personally am not a fan of her music.

My current favorite singers - I am not saying they are the best of all time or the most talented, though - are Andrea Bocelli, Brian Stokes Mitchell (you may know him as Trevor from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air :D) or Michael Crawford; and Katharine McPhee or Leslie Mills.

Every post so far has been complete and utter bullshit. Sure some of those singers have good voices, but as far as music history goes, they are just, well, mediocre at best. One of the benefits of the music industry is that we are free to compare the voices of the past with those of the present. I have, and only one voice stands out to me: Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta aka Lady GaGa. No one else even comes close to her level. After listening to her, all other singers sound like complete garbage. I actually have to refrain from listening to other singers for a few days to let my mind re-adjust to the mediocrity of the rest of the music industry. Everyone knows this.
