Who goes garage-sale'in?

Miramonti

Lifer
It's peak season around here (NM). We try to be disciplined and just get what we need or are looking for, but some things are just too hard to leave alone.

Last Saturday I got exactly what was looking for:

2 shovels and 1 lawn aerator: $1 each
chair matt for office: $1

We only hit a couple starting in the afternoon, but this weekend we're getting up very early to get choice pickings.

I prefer flea markets. They're a little more expensive, but it's a 1 stop shop. Sometimes you'll spend a day at yard sales, but most will be crap.

I'm going next weekend. Maple bluff is having its community garage sale. I usually like to hit the entire neighborhood sales, as opposed to heading across town for one or two.

I've found some nice stuff for dirt cheap at them in the past but I barley ever go to them.

Actually I can't say that I've ever even set out to go to one, it's always been that I was driving somewhere, saw one and decided to stop, spur of the moment.

I got a nice solid wood framed large mirror from one for $5 about a year ago though, I sanded it down and restained it and it looks great.

I feel like I have to negotiate more at a flea market, which I'm not much a fan of, because they often do it for a living. That's not to say I won't haggle at a garage sale, its just I don't get as much resistance. 🙂

I haven't been to a garage sale for a while, but considering how much I love grabbing random shit at the VV Boutique (Value Village), I should probably be a prime candidate.

I love it when community and subdivisions do this. Less driving around trying to read signs written with a bic pen.

I always have my fixit-goggles on...with just a little elbow grease, one can find some real gems at giveaway prices.

Tell me about it... We're on a budget so I need to remind her on occassion to (for the most part) stick to our short list and priority areas, lol.

man for $1 items, why waste time sitting out there selling?

Yup.

I had 1 garage sale in my life and it'll never happen again. Atleast if I give things to goodwill I can feel good about it and get a tax writeoff, instead of selling something a fraction of what its worth and still have people try to get it at 1/2 that.

I've stopped at them a few times, but I've never found anything other than cheap crap. I'd never get up early enough to get a shot at the good stuff. `

If you have kids, garage sales are the best place to pick up clothes and toys on the cheap.

We hit up a neighborhood sale last weekend and came away with half a trunk full of clothes for our daughter. For $10. One dress alone that we picked up would have easily been $30 if you bought it retail. We bought it for $.25. And another 4 of them along with it. Pants & shirts were $.10 a piece. With infants/toddlers you have a few month window where clothes actually fit. Spending retail prices on that stuff is just stupid.

We also grabbed a little kitchen set for her to play with along with a couple gallon bags worth of pots/pans/fake food/silverware/ect to with it for $7.

You just can't beat deals like that.

I go to garage sales and also auctions.

Auctions can be tough if you want the same thing someone else does , have to be careful not to start over bidding just for the "I got it and you didn't " thoughts.

Check yellow pages for some local auction companies. Storage bin auctions are some of the best. That is where they auction off the contents of rental storage sites. Never know what is inside till they cut the lock and start pulling out stuff to sell.

I would like to, but I can't bring myself to wake up early enough. People around her literally show at nice garage sales a few hours before they start. All the good stuff is gone in an hour.

Yeah you gotta go early.

I got a Dell + LCD for $1 ( LCD had a bad capacitor in the inverter - workin fine now ) and a HP Digital Oscilloscope for $75.

I have not gone to a garage sale in at least 10 years...and I am 22 😛.

It takes too long to look for anything at garage sales.

not worth the effort w/ gas prices now. spend all today going from one garage to another w/o really finding anything of value.

It's good if you're just starting out and you need a lot of basic necessities
