I was in Brazil a few months ago, and was rather shocked at their drinking laws. It is completely legal to have and chug beers in the car, under the assumption that it's not the driver. Which is funny, because it's not hard to tell an officer it's your passengers beer.

So yeah there we were in the car... chugging back beers. Never thought I would see the day D:

I agree. Are there stats on all of this? I would expect more accidents because of all these idiots, or is it just leading to more close calls?

We already have more than we would otherwise. It's becomes a daily occurrence to read news stories of pedestrians and bicyclist being hit by drivers distracted while texting. And as a tie-in to some of the bicycling threads, this is my single biggest fear while on a bike. Luckily, I've never witnessed an incident, but I have seen many cars drift into bike lanes and over the center line while drivers texted.

I think we'd all be genuinely shocked at how often people get with stupid things while driving. For instance, I'd be willing to bet that the number of drunk driving trips that result in either an accident or an arrest is well under 1 in 1000. That's scary.
