I work for a publishing company and we have off. My son has the whole week off from school so I have to drag his ass to my job for 4 days.

At least in my case it is not the US taxpayer footing my time off.

I do and that sucks because I don't get paid, and if I'm not going to get paid I'd rather choose my day off on my own.

I do, and it's a good thing, because my kid's daycare is closed.

There are 10 Federal designated holidays each year. Most companies I have worked for during my career have given at least that minimum number of holidays per calendar year plus a "floater" holiday for employees. Normally they will take 1 or 2 of the 10 and use them to extend another holiday such as the Friday after Thanksgiving or an extra day around the 4th of July which means you won't get 1 or 2 of the "official" ones. Federal employees have to take a day of leave if they want any day other than the 10 designated ones off. State and local employees go by whatever their locality does, in most cases they mimic the Feds. Your tax dollars suffer far greater abuses at the hands of government at all levels that you can rant about rather than pick something that most people with full time jobs and benefits receive, public or private.

Which President is "this president"? Since the holiday by law is designated as Washington's Birthday if this is some kind of Bush thing your company would be safe taking the holiday since "President's Day" is a fiction created by the media and the PC crowd.
