Who finds rap stupid?

DISCLAIMER: The following is simply MY OWN OPINION... no offense intented for rap fans. We are all entitled to our own opinions, tastes, and preferences after-all aren't we?

Okay I'll give some credit b/c I know there are some talented rappers out there that don't 'try' to make themselves look stupid, but they seem to becoming rarer and rarer as the flood of crap on the rap market is taking over. Rappers like Juvenile, Black Rob, JaRule (once again no offense intended for any fans out there). Seriously though, what's with this stuff?

"Make em say uhhh.... uhhh. Nannanana!!! Nannanaaaa!"

"Everytime I come around, BLING BLING!"

Where the hell do they come up with the lyrics? I mean what are they thinking when they are writing this crap? Do they just sit down and start writing something like, ""Andale, Andale, mama eea eea... UH-OHHHHHH" and go, "Hey that great, why don't I just repeat that like 50 times and make a song out of that!" Oh and of course they have to start making up words once they run outa material... like where the heck did Bling come from?
Is there any cohension, is there any logical theme... are these songs supposed to make ANY sense what-so-ever?

I honestly can't think of any talent that's involved in rapping besides being stupid (apparently there is a skill involved with acting stupid :D). I swear, rap is like the WWF. They're all marketed with this bad ass tough guy image and you just have to have alliances like the money cash millionares like they do in pro westling. But hey, I have friends who like pro wrestling so I'm not trying to bash anyone. I just find it hard to believe that people can actually take this stuff seriously. I myself actually enjoy listening to a lot of rap... for laughs that is. I just can't contain myself from laughing at some of the stuff that's coming outa their mouths. I just love pulling up to a movie theatre or a mall and blasting the speakers with some nelly... get that car rattling with the Honda effect (all you homie's know what I'm talking about ;)). Or I can go the extra mile and lean back the seat all the way and try driving one-handed with full arm extension... It's just soo fun! :)

everything is marketed to appeal to different people. what you pickup on, others don't...thus we need diversity. and i'd rather hear bling bling at high volume than "ocean front property in alabaaaaaaaaaammmaaaaaaaaaaa"...

This is a pretty common thread but you're like grouping gansta' rap as all rap. I've never heard the beastie boys say "bling bling"

I find rap incredibly stupid and incredibly entertaining at the same time. It's obvious that it's all one big act (how can you claim to be ghetto - i.e. poor, one moment; then talk about your money and cars the next) and much of it is ignorant, but some of it is either fun to listen to or brings up good points about the problems of society, or for some reason or another is easier to listen to than the other crap plastered all over radios and TV these days.

Who cares if you don't like it:) I don't like "hardcore" rap either, but I'm not sitting here complaining about it. I bet that there are a lot of things that you don't like...how 'bout posting that whole list here in OT while you're at it?:p

To each his own...I also don't like Country (and not that pop Dixie Chicks/Faith Hill stuff), but you don't hear me in here complaining about the depressing lyrics...

I like rap and let me just say that the rappers you named ARE dumb and have no talent. The whole MasterP and friends and all that crap coming from down south sucks real bad and is killing hip-hop. It's sad, because they're the ones you hear on radio and see performing at music awards. There are good rapppers and rap groups out there that try to innovate and actually have lyrical talent.(Outkast is one of them, Dr Dre is also up there)

Not all rappers are dumb and talentless. Some can actually do more than jump around crying out HUUUHH!! HHUUH!!! It's just sad to see they're the ones who get the most attention. BTW, I have no idea who can buy all their cds, because they actually sell alot.

I never thought I would like Lauryn Hill, but after seeing how incredibly talented she is, I've changed my opinion. I consider her a talented musician and not a rapper.

Regardless of how you feel about them, Snoop, Dr. Dre and Outkast are innovative, write good lyrics, and are musicians. I used to not like it, but I've grown to like it and appreciate it musically.

Let me play devil's advocate here, Nirvana "Smells like Teen Spirit" has nonsense lyrics. Anthony Keidis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers say that in some songs he'll put together lyrics that don't make sense, just because they sound good together. He experiments with the sounds of the words and their flow. These guys are considered musical geniuses, while you classify rap as crap.

And just so you know, I respect Nirvana musically, but don't like their music especially, and I love the Chili Peppers. Californication hasn't left my CD changer since August.

late.

Over the past month or two I've come to appreciate a few rap tunes. I find that they are a good refresher from "perfect love songs" etc. I like rap that is about reality, like losing a friend (eg r.i.p. 2pac).

I'm a classical clarinetist, and I don't live a "thug life." I guess that makes me unbiased on the subject. I typically listen to classical and oldies.

Sugadaddy, I assume that you know that Outkast is from Atlanta.. if that ain't the South, I don't know what is.

I like rap, that's about all I buy on CD when I do buy CDs. The main thing I like is the beats that is behind the lyrics, I'm usually too zoned out to notice the lyrics. The bass... thump thump.. The beat that goes along with rap music entertains me more than other types of music. I don't really pay much attention to the artists unless there is a song that has caught my attention and I wanna buy the CD. I couldn't name 25% of the artists I hear on the radio.

You wanna hear lyrics about fast cars and big houses, or some guy saying over and over "I'm a loser, so why don't you kill me"? It's about entertainment, what entertains me may not entertain you. It's about the artists expressing themselves in different ways and how people can relate to them. Whatever floats your boat.....

first off I'd like to apologize as I did not know this topic has been discussed before (I don't frequent the OT forum much), but getting back to the topic, I do agree that there are some talented.
I don't consider Rage against the Machine rap, but bands like the beastie boys and on the more extreme side, Outkast (rosa parks and Ms Jackson are the sh*ts!), I believe have some talent. I'm not a big fan of those groups or particulary like most of their music, but they still

NFS4: I agree that music is based on personal preference, but I just think that rap is WRONG. Daemon said it perfectly describing rap as, "Stupid... and vulgar... and degrading to women." All the songs seem to hold a single theme: money, booty, and gang-life. And just look at the videos... over 90% of them contain and in fact focus on thong clad, skin-bearing women shaking their money-makers and behinds. What kind of message is this sending out? On top of all that, the lyrics are poorly written and hold no true meaning! This isn't music. It's utter crap! I'm sorry NFS4, but I personally think this stuff is a disgrace to music and shouldn't even be listened to. I prefer getting my music for free rather then paying for it, but does that make it right? Yea, I know... very vague comparision, but you get the idea.

RAP = Retards attempting Poetry

* BTW, this is all with the exception to certain types of rap. It's hard to argue when you can't even separate the group you are focusing on b/c there is no specific formal label/category.

Rap is a derivation of the blues, and is heavily influenced by African(not so much European) music. It relies on a solid groove that allows for story telling. It often has interesting rhythms(influenced by African music). Like any art, there are good rappers and there are bad rappers.

<< "Hey that great, why don't I just repeat that like 50 times and make a song out of that!" >>

Repetition is pretty standard in music. Our 'pop music' relies more on the idea tension and release rather than the idea of getting into a groove that really feels good. The repitition that you are critizing acts to build up the groove.

<< Oh and of course they have to start making up words once they run outa material >>

In another context you might call 'making up words' creative. In this context I certainly think it is creative. It also helps to permeate the attitude of the rapper and the culture from which he/she comes.

BTW, I don't really listen to rap that much, but do enjoy it from time to time.

It seems to me that you are not critisizing the music, but the message of the music. Its an important distinction.

Truly a person that has been to too many focus groups and watches the little "spots" on the local nightly news and peeps a few glances at MTV here and there. You have NO idea what rap is about or the industry as a whole.

All rap is not bad. I wouldn't even go so far as to say most of it is bad. It's just another form of music. I don't particularly care for it, but you don't see me trashing it. Are you telling me that some like Lauren Hill is crap b/c she raps?

Besides, all the things you said about rap I could apply to many rock and metal groups (exchange money for drugs, booty for skinny white girls dancing around, and gang-life for living in your parents basement whipping up some CRANK).
