I've begun to notice that I'm pretty bad at every RTS. Excluding C&C3.
I can actually hold my own in that game.
Usually when I get an RTS, I play in the campaign to get my bearings and then do a few skirmishes against the AI. I can almost always beat a medium AI, but hardly EVER a hard AI.
Then I decide to go online. EVERYONE OWNS ME ONLINE (except C&C3). :(
No matter how much I practice, make strategies, etc, I still get destroyed (especially in Company of Heroes).
Does anyone else experience this on a regular basis?

it just takes time...one thing that I think that has gotten out of hand the past 5 years with RTS is the internet.

It used to be like you said, you play and develop a strategy to try to win games. Now everyone just reads the internet on the fastest/easiest/cheapest tactic to win, and basically just follow some walkthrough and do that over and over.

That's one thing I like about CoH (even though I lose every time). People don't spam the same strategy over and over. You have to adjust to play styles and bad choices, and every map requires a different strategy.
The only RTS I could actually win at other than C&C3 is Starcraft. I think it's cause people in both of those games tend to follow certain strategies, but I make up my own in both games...

i'm HORRIBLE at RTS games.

I can't beat the computer on easy mode in WC3, haha

then again, I just don't want to devote the time to get good.

I totally suck at RTS games. I had to use cheat codes in Warcraft 3 to get anywhere against the computer.

That is the last RTS I played.

That's what it seems like. Everyone will read some cheap strategy and just keep doing that over and over, instead of coming up with their own. Or if someone posts something that works well, they'll steal that idea and use. If people solely came up with their own strats I think it would be different online.

When I played SC back in the day I used to be pretty good (ugg these past tense references suck). I can get through C&C3 pretty well on my own on normal level. I beat the computer on RON on medium difficulty about 40% of the time. That is on 3v3 map where i'm the only human and if my teammate AIs are good lol.

i like RTS but I suck at them too.
I can do ok against the medium or normal AI but anything higher i just get destroyed.

its like the AI has some kind of cheats and builds tons of units before i can even get my half my base built.

although i am what you'd call a turtle though. once i play through the campaigns i'll go get a trainer or something and just sit and make a huge base and army and then attack the enemy.

i don't think i'm coordinated enough to keep track of everything at once and control everything at once.

I don't suck. But I tend to not do well online simply because I don't bother with a real strategy beyond "Defend until I have a giant mass of units and then win by sheer numbers", because It almost always works against the computer.

TBS (Turn based strategy) I'm great at, while RTS is a struggle. I'm a cautious player, and like to take time deciding each move.

i'm too deliberate for rts, even piss my son off when i pause in single player games of rome or med2 during battles. i wouldn't even try playing COH or something online, i'd get destroyed.

I remember playing Starcraft online against some guy. I took the time and was going really fast and was doing really well and made a whole bunch of battle cruisers (whatever they're called) and sent them over to his base. His base was surrounded by turrets and other defense stuff...like literally almost 50 of them. WHAT THE HELL!?!! What a boring game. Sucks. I hate starcraft. Rise of Nations is way better. I'm gonna eat pizza now.

I'd love to Lurker Drop (Starcraft) / Comanche Rush (C&C Generals) you just to see the reaction.

The problem with RTS games is basically: Who ever knows all the hotkeys and can press a mouse faster than you, will win. It shouldn't be called RTS anymore because there is no strategy, unless you count strategy as a sequence of hotkeys pressed and whoever can push them faster wins.

Thats pretty much Chris Taylors opinion too. Its also why he created TA and TA Kingdoms and Supreme Commander. He was trying to get away from the standard click-fest and resource wars that most RTS's were.
I dont know if he suceeded or not, but I enjoy his games.

As for me: I too would rather play a turn-based game or most any space conquest game and actually practice REAL strategy instead of Command & Conquer or Warcraft.
But, they are fun games and I do enjoy them from time to time.

Tried getting into grognard games but they kicked my ass.

Actually, thats pretty much how I used to see Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. They arent very good action games when you think about it. They're more like a violent version of Simon Says (the electronic game).
All you do is memorize a bunch of movements and just wait for the appropriate time to execute them. Contra and most other side scrolling shooters have more genuine "action".
Right around the time those two were ruling the Snes and Genesis I was getting into computer games and actually using my brain.
I got a Playstation for about 6 months so I could play Final Fantasy 7 and that was it. I left the consoles and never looked back.
Every once in a while I'll see a console game labeled as a thinker but I never want to purchase the whole system just to try that one title.

Newer games are getting away from this style of gameplay. CoH for instance, is nothing like that.

I think it takes a bit of intuitivness to know how each one functions and how to exploit it.

I've played a few: Warcraft and WCIII, Emporer: The Battle for Dune, Total Annihilation...perhaps Ground Control qualifies, not sure.

All had some trick or weakness to exploit: Dune didn't have any food support system or something similar, so you could make units willy nilly, once you built a big bertha or vulcan in TA, you ruled the game, GC: use SpecOps for foward observing and scouting, no need for aircraft but have anti-air.

WC is perhaps the toughest of them all, but I'm new to it.

Oh, I've also played Shogun: Total War.

And let's keep in mind, that these games are not very intuitive. How many times in life do you click and drag around a group of office workers and assign them a number and a project?
