I just had to request forbearance for 6 months too because they variable interest rate just jacked up my monthly payment to $475 and they are offering a consolidation program in april so i'm going to do that and hopefully get this thing under control and more manageable.

I have a fairly large private loan that I am working on, though it's nothing compared to yours. Stupid variable rates. :|

I'm just not a risk taker, and since I am not wealthy, no one in my family is wealthy, and I have little to look forward to except a middle class income. I stick with fixed.

If you could point me to a private place to get a fixed rate on a student loan, I'm all ears. Unfortunately, my parents made too much for me to get much in the way of federal loans, but not enough to pay much of my degree.
 
The only University that I know of that is Private in NY is St. John's University that cost around $24k a year.

Its ok, with the new budget plan we will owe far far more in the near future. I feel bad for those that arent already done with college... its only going to get worse.

Im looking at 16k/Year plus 6K books/year for the next 5 years starting this september..it is all going to be loans. Plus living expenses. Luckily, at waterloo you get to do 4month school, 4 month school, 4 month work every year. So Ill graduate with 2 years experience. Only downside is I want to go to graduate school...so no idea what studen loans will look like when I am done.
 
loan was down to $50k last year, paid off with all the extra money I made, I'm down to $36k now...hope to get everything paid off by the end of next year. Started with $90k in loans.

I have about $15k left I think, paying it off over 15 years because the interest rate is pretty low. Could pay it off today, but interest rate is lower than ING Direct.

Cheap school + scholarship = no drowning in loans.

I've got some loans, but I pay $76 a month for 10 years. It isn't bad considering my three degrees took me almost 9 years of school.
