Who else works in an office quieter than a library?

There is no background noise. Minimal talking, no music, no personal music players allowed. Actually my particular office is on a factory floor so I have this rythmic thudding of press lines in the background that's probably worse than just total quiet. It's hard to even concentrate. :(

You don't need to concentrate on ATOT, you are taking this forum to seriously.

HAH! I'll trade you and I guarantee that this environment would drive you insane! Pretty much constant chatter from the other side of the cubicle... yap yap yap yap yap *RAUCOUS LAUGHTER* yap yap yap yap

Ours is like that somewhat. we have a small office and when the phones are not ringing or the radio is not on... it is VERY quiet. uncomfortable almost.
I am annoyed by it because everyone can hear what everyone else is saying.

I'd fvcking end myself. Ugh.

Here I'm the only one in this office (they just opened one up here, I work alone). So it's quiet everyday, all day, unless I decide to talk to myself. Once a week my boss comes down though which is nice.

Same for me. I'd kill for peace and quiet.

Ugh is right man. I listen to my mp3 player to retain sanity. Pretty sad for an office IMHO. Office etiquette here is brutal. The office etiquette link was sent to people a while back and most of them just laughed at it.

I cannot find batteries big enough for my noise cancellation headphones to work properly.

My mind developed its ability to focus while studying in a library for many years. It drives me nuts when less focused people talk loudly or listen to their music. Although that rhythmic pounding is its own issue.

I could never work in dead quiet.
When I worked in a cubicle I was always the guy to turn on the music when I got to my desk.
People appreciated it.
Even now when I work myself in my office I need music on.

It's a nice mix here... sometimes you'll hear people talk, but usually it's fairly quiet. You're more than welcome to listen to music as well, just try not to disturb others with it. I used to listen to music, but I find it more annoying when I can't hear people coming for the quick mouse click-off ATOT action :p.

No. Open plan office with rows of large desks on both sides of our large office room. Lots of banter in our team and we have a laugh. Other teams are less animated and seem less 'fun' so I lucked out in the team I ended up in. Our team definately seem more fun and loud.

It's all good.

i work in a call center and they are always on the phones and when it gets real busy on the call floor its sounds like being in the cafeteria in grade school during lunch just every one talking at the same time. Then at my desk i here the light sound of the servers and the UPS running they are not in the same room as me but i have a window looking into the server room and you here them running. but yeah most of the time i just jam out to my mp3 player

I dig quiet. I just moved my office to a quieter end of the building! I love it!

Heh I don't think I'd like total chitchat either. Something in between would be nice. Heck even just being allowed to use MP3 players would make it so much more enjoyable. There is a plant radio but it's so loud in this part of the plant you can't hear the radio.

It depends on the office I'm in. I'm the support for one of the smaller branch offices, so I work between two different places.

The main office is pretty loud, but I'm also in the computer lab most of the time, so I can escape the noise when needed.

The smaller office is quieter, but I like it better because I'm not stuck in a computer lab and more importantly, the girls are cuter.

Thats how I feel. I am the lone IT person at my work; which is a call center travel agency and everyone is on the phone all the time talking to clients so I rarely talk to anyone if its not work related. :-/ Feels very lonely.

At the long term contract I'm on the regular employees get on a daily team conf call w a handful of people right around me and remote people. Every friggin person puts it on speaker phone even though they have headsets so you can hear the person talking two cubes over plus you get it one second later from 5 different directions over the speakerphone. It's so friggin annoying and it gives me a headache but as a consultant I really can't lay into them like I'd like.

Plus I swear they must have contests to see who can have the loudest ringtones and let it play for the longest before they answer. At my old job it was just common courtesy that you would put it on vibrate or vibe then ring. No one wants to hear your Akon ringtone 8 rows away.

I work between 2 high school computer labs, in the server room. No it's not quiet to say the least.
