Let's try this again. I *hope* I'm not in GH this time

Anyway, I've had the roadtrip bug for a while, but I have neither the time nor the resources. I'd love to go camping / hiking out in the west, and fishing up in Canada. I'd love to travel to Europe too, to see all the old castles and cathedrals. My old girlfriend brought back a lot of pics from her trip to spain last spring; I'd love to see some of those places myself. The only things stopping me are 1) money, and 2) time - in that order. If I had the money, I would find a way to make the time.

How about you?

Australia and New Zealand without a doubt.

So much to see and explore, affordable and friendly locals.

Would like to vacation in the Caribbean again. Went to Aruba several years ago and it was great. Might also like to travel to Japan sometime

I've been lucky. I was an Army brat: born in Tucson, Arizona, moved to Saudi Arabia, then to Monterey, California, and then to Berlin, Germany where I had a front-row seat to witness the fall of the Wall and Unification. I didn't travel much between the ages of 11 and 15, but in 1995, after taking two years of German classes, I began traveling to Germany alone. Since then, I think the only year I did not travel to Europe was like 1997. I studied in Düsseldorf in 1999, visited nine European countries in six weeks in 2002, lived on a Greek island for three months in 2003, and now I work for the German government. I was sent to Germany on business for four weeks in July/August, and I go back to Berlin in December.

So, I have traveled, and I love to travel. The sad part is that I have only scratched the surface of Europe, much less Pacific countries like Australia, Japan, Thailand, and New Zealand. My problem is that I have become so comfortable with Europe, that when vacation time comes up, I just head over there.

In my opinion, you can't go wrong traveling to the countries that surround the Alps: Southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland, northern Italy, and eastern France. This area, especially in summer, is simply breathtaking. They are quite majestic in winter too. If a more arid climate suits you, visit a Spanish or Greek island. Istanbul, Turkey is getting more popular as well, and it's cheaper than Greece or Spain.

In my opinion, you experience so much more when you throw away the guide book, visit the major cities only briefly, avoid tour groups, and visit fewer places with more time at each rather then try to see too many places in too little time.

As I like to say, heaven on earth is a full backpack, a Eurail pass, and an endless summer in Europe. Youth hostels are an absolute blast too!

I'm pretty much in the same situation as the OP. I've been stuck in the midwest my entire life, want to go places, but have no money. It sucks.

not really a fan of the europe scene

The far east would be cool, too. hmm..so many places, so littel time :( And I agree with GTAudiophile in that the best way to do it is to ditch the tour groups. I never have liked those, anyway. I'd rather spend more time in one place and really get to explore it. I probably would still take a guide book though, if only for ideas on where to get started and where to go.

I spent three days on Ibiza in 2002. Simply amazing. Between the beaches during the day and the clubs ALL night, don't expect to sleep AT ALL!

Web site for you.

Yet another thing on my List of Things to Do: get my scuba-diving certification :) Clubs never have appealed to me, but I'd love to go hiking, fishing, diving, etc.
