Who Else Thinks Anime is Cool?

As for me?

I've seen a bunch - Trigun, Big O, Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Gundam Wing, etc....

And most of it I really don't like, sorry. The unrealistic characters and repetitive drawings, etc....

BUT, there are some good shows!

For one, I REALLY like 'Big O'! The style of drawing is classy (VERY film noir - and they know it, many stories fall into this catagory). The characters are 'realistic' looking - still clearly cartoons - but like comic-book heroes. Properly proportioned without saucer-sized eyes or anything. The story is great. And the US dubbing is *excellent*.

'Witch Hunter Robin' I like for similar reasons. Decent looking characters, VERY cool drawing style (reminded me a LOT of the PC game "The Longest Journey"), good dubbing, etc.

So, I'd say anime is cool if you give it a try! Stay away from the mainstream stuff....because it's probably aimed at kids, anyway. But, there is a lot of good anime out there!

BIG O, IT'S SHOWTIME! Big O is a good example of dubbing done right. I can't stand the jap version now.

Well, option 4 is just a tad stronger than I feel :p but it's the most apt; I could never get into it at all.

Like any genre, it has it strong and weak points.

I dont like all the stuff out there, but I do like a lot of them.

:):thumbsup:

My favorite is Gunsingler Girl.

Nice, short, simple. Doesn't try to do too much.

I posted this reply in that other thread, but it seems approiate to post here too
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
mmm . . . hard to say. My standsouts though:
Sci-Fi
Two series here stand out above every single other in my opinion. Those are:
Series Expirements Lain
(I probably don't need to comment about this)
The Infinite Ryvius (amv link - Dark Side of the Moon)
This series is incredible, but need some intro. First of all - a lot of people don't get far enough to see it shine. There are about *20* very important characters, and the first 3 episodes are basically introducing all of them, which means they crawl. After that though it picks up speed really fast, and doesn't stop. Also, there comes a point where you really wonder if they can pull off any sort of ending, but they exceed all expectations.
Romance/Comedy
Fruits Baskets I think 99% of romantic comedies in anime are overrated crap, or so full of fanservice its stupid. This is a huge exception. The episodes vary from ridicluous comedy to serious drama, but it does it all very well. The premise is so ridicluous I won't even put it here because it will turn you away -- but somehow they make it believable since the characters are done so well. Also, one note, you really want the fansubs of these (done by furuba) or read the linear notes carefully. Some of these episodes are incredibly confusing without some background on the Zodiac calender. One quick example - one character's alter ego makes zero sense unless you know that in Japanse folklore horsefish are considered baby dragons. The fansubbers have a note on this, but if you (ahem) just watch the DVD's without reading the linear notes it will just fly right past you.
Love Hina (amv link -- Tarzan and Jane)
I really hesistate to put this here. This falls more under ecchi comedy then romantic comedy, but it makes the list for three very important reasons. First, the fact that none of the characters take it seriously at all somehow makes it seem more real . . . you'd have to watch it to see what I'm getting at. Secondly it is excuted masterfully. Third, the characters actuially change and grow throughout the series. Urishima and Naru are very different people at the beginning and the end of the series.
Action
Berserk
Epic storyline, great battles, deep characters, probing themes. No other action series comes close. Too bad they never finished it. The 25th episode even has a next episode preview -- but there is no episode 26.
Noir
I have very mixed fealings about this anime. If it was 13 episodes it would be right up there with Berserk, but at 26 there is just so much filler. You could go from the first episode, to the episode about the stray cat, to the three episodes surrounding Chloe (This takes 14 episodes) and miss almost nothing. Besides that though, I just wanted to put it on the list because the first episode is, in my opinion, the best opening episodes of any Anime. Get it, and see if you want more ;)
Drama
Shingetsutan Tsukihime (only avaliable on fansub as of right now)
This also needs a little bit of background. Tsuki-hime is based around an entire series of doujinshi (of the non hentai type) done by one of the best circles in Japan. The story in the anime is just a small slice of it, involving a boy who can see . . . well . . . its complicated, and hard to communiate without massive spoilers. Just watch it.
Comedy
FLCL
An absolutly insane comedy by GAINAX. Another series that is hard to talk about without giving away spoilers, just watch it. One important note -- this series also has the absolute worst dub I've ever seen. You really want to watch this in the original japanese.
Azumanga Daioh
You will absolute love or complely despise this series. I don't know anyone who has an opinion in between. It basically follows 12 schoolgirls through their highschool lives. Yes, I know this is the premise of a lot of anime, but Azumanga is very special. It was masterfully put together, and has a tendancy to point out the comedy in mudane things. Highly recomended.
Mecca
RahXephon (amv link - Euphoria)
First a note. I hate meccha. That's why I decided to point this series out. The best description of it I have heard is "Evangelion done right." In fact, the first time I saw it I stopped watching after the first episode, because the first episode of RahX and Eva are almost completly identicle. Things start to get much more interesting though, and I won't spoil it. This also definatly falls under the brainf*ck category, very minute details that come up earlier become very important later, blink and you miss them.
The Most Underrated of the Last 3 Years
Haibane Renmei I won't spoil it, just watch it. here is a link to the first episode One note though, the first 4 epidsodes or so are in the same vein, but then the story start to get much darker. It also has an incredible ending. The character design and much of the story was done by ABe, most famous for S.E. Lain and Niea_7.
Also, since I had the space, here are three more AMV's I like for the heck of it:
Battle Athletes - Believe
.hack//SIGN - Kunstliche Welten
AMG - Shining
eh. some of it is alright.
I find a lot of anime to be very boring, though, with the empashis being put on the art instead of the story.
nice post Chu
Berserk = godlike
Noir = good stuff
u forgot GTO though! very nice comedy
Goldenboy is very funyn as well, although very short.
Full Metal Panic is decent
Samurai Deeper Kyo is good
Scryed can be a little tedious but good
Kino's Journey is a tad serious and philosphical, you definitely have to be in the mood to watch it but it is intriguing at times.
Last Exile is good.
Cowboy Bebop is classic although I feel it is a tad overrated
Serial Experiments: Lain is a pain to watch, I sat through the whole thing. I don't know how i managed to do it.
Neon Genesis Evangellion: Extremely overrated crap.
Outlaw Star: I really like this series.
Trigun: Overrated, decent at best.
Chances are if you give it a chance there are quite a few series out there that will be enjoyable to you, jsut have to give it a chance.
Personally I don't see how anyone can dislike Berserk :p
I know there is a ton of good stuff out there, I just tried to make a list of the "best of the best" since even 90% of the domestic stuff is crap. I swear ADV just takes the cheapest series they can. Agent Akia, Neo Ranga, Mao, wtf? Even most fansubbers didn't bother finishing these series up.
Don't get me started on Kiddy Grade . . .
Most anime sucks... Most anime is either childish, so convoluted that even after watching it a billion times(I would like to add that I have never watched a series more then once) it still makes no sense(and no, just because an anime is confusing does not make it "deep"), and/or the ending sucks. Oh and the list above by chu sucks except Haibane, Tsukihime, and Azumanga(BTW I don't know how you can put fruits baskets in your list!!?? that is one of the most STUPID RETARDED AJSDFKASEI#@(SA*A animes I have ever seen). If you want see an excellent anime watch Juuni Kokki.
the last part of my post wasn't intended for you. It was intended for the people who bunch anime together and say 'it sucks'
Another revelant post I made in the other thread:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just like a lot of people falsely assume there is pretty much one type of geek, a lot of people here falsely assume there is only one type of Anime fan.

The people who like shows like Magical Girl (Sailor Moon) and Super-Kawaii Animes (CCS) are not necessarly the same people who like Mindf*ck anime's (SE Lain, Boogiepop, MONSTER) are not necessarly the same as the people who like Mecha (Gundam) are not necessarly the same people who like romantic comedy (Ai Yori Aoshi, Love Hina) are not necessarly the same people who like Insanity (Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, Kodocha) are not necessarly the same people who like Romance, etc.

There are a LOT of subgroups out there -- and there is a lot of vicious debate amongst them.

Also, I think that it makes sense more to talk about Studio's then it does to talk about genres in many cases. The same group of creators were behind Hack//SIGN, Noir, and Sailor Moon. All three series are worshiped by various group of people, and the studio (Bee Train) is a subdivision of Production I.G., who are most famous for Ghost in the Shell and the animation in Kill Bill.

-Chu

~~~~~~~~
You can obviously tell we have different opinions on these subgenres ;)
I hate anime.
I have yet to see one good japanese movie/anime/show, except JAV ;)
I agree with it being childish, it's mostly fantasy stuff where there would be guys with super powers, or sci fi with big ass robots and people fight across the galaxy with weak plots.
Prince of Tennis.. WTF that's the lamest shît ever. Who the hell makes a toon about kids playing tennis? It just shows different poses of them doing tennis moves in comic book style, with the flashing colors in the back. Seriously, I don't doubt anime freaks go through seizures ten times a day watching that crap.
Another thing. Almost all anime I've seen, they always like to show an angle where you can look up the girl's skirt. Pervs...
sigh . . . posts like this sadden me. Sturgon's rule - 90% of everything is crap. From this post I think you've seen mostly stuff in that 90%. Believe it or not, most Anime is *NOT* about meccha or superpowers, but most Anime that is brought here commercially is. Big difference. Also, about all the panty shots in anime, well, a general rule is any rule with a panty shot within the first 10-20 minutes is almost gaurenteed to turn out to be crap. I haven't had that rule fail in a LONG time. Give some of the stuff on my list a try . . .
I did not like Berserk or Noir. Berserk (the anime... I HATE manga elitists) was just.. "bleh". Just a bunch of bloody violence. Noir draaaaaaaaaaaaaggged. If I see those big blue eyes blinking one more time.... arrgh!! WAY too many flashbacks, and WAY to many times do they say "Noir!"
See, that's just it, you're dead wrong. Hell, of the shows I mentioned, there is virtually no 'boobies' at all! (Indeed, in "Big O", the first character that even HAS them isn't introduced until quite a few episodes into the series...and generally doesn't show any 'skin' at all. And there are NO 'boobies' in "Witch Hunter Robin")
Cowboy Bebop is classic although I feel it is a tad overrated
Cowboy Bebop would have been a very good show if they had not introduced the chick as a main character, and - worst offense of ALL - that IDIOT KID. Gods, I hate cliched idiot kids.
Keep with the bounty hunter theme, explore Spike's past with the crime world - that's all good. Would probably have taken half as many episodes, too (less filler).
