Who else loves needless overkill?

Building computers is one of those things that you can get exactly what you need that serves your purpose perfectly... Or you can get way more than you need and just laugh at yourself...

I am of the latter 🙂

Recent overkill: Purchased a Corsair A70 CPU Cooler for $21.44, to cool my stock i3-2100 CPU 😵

Well with a cooler like that you can have a quiet setup because you won't really need a huge tower and a loud fan to cool a stock clocked 2100.

yea, a70 prolly quieter than stock. if u got an nh-d14 however...that would be needless overkill 🙂

There is no such thing as "overkill" in PC building, I like to call it "future-proofing", of course that's until until you have to buy new parts in 3 months.

I'd be interested if it works fanless. I'd guess you'd probably want to mount the radiator on a top fan mount for the convection, but if you have a positive pressure case, why not?

Antec 300 with the top and rear fan exhaust. Unplugged the two front intakes because they were just too loud... Temps didn't go up very much either

<--- forums' definition for OVERKILL 😉

You can ask any of the mod's here...

If its not overkill, its not an "aigo" system.

oh is that what your calling it?

Then my LC loop is what i call "Thermal Proofing" YEAH!! so i dont need to get more cooling gear for new parts in 3 months... yeah... thats it...

😛

"Overkill" is all relative.

Personally, I don't buy things that I consider overkill, but others (read: my wife) may disagree.

OHHHH im gonna go with your excuse too!!

I NEED ALL THIS POWER!! YES!
when i play Hearts with Gillbot i need to have that .00000001ns lag inbetween each move or he will cheat somehow!!!

i wanna get a 2600k for an HTPC build, seriuosly, not joking

I was going to but I decided to use my 875k instead.

My rig list:
Yasui - P6T v1/980x/GTX460/24GB DDR3-1333
Spinal - D5400XS/Two QX9775/HD4870/16GB FBDIMM
Gill2kServer - P67A-UD3-B3/i3-2100/NVS280/6GB DDR3-1333
Media - GA-P55-UD3L/875k/HD3870/16GB DDR3-1333
Media2 - G43-TwinsFullHD/E7500/GMAx4500/4GB DDR2-6400
Generic - G31M-S R2.0/E5200/GMA3100/2GB DDR2-5300
ECS - G31M-S R2.0/Celeron 450/GMA3100/2GB DDR2-5300

I just tore down a couple of other rigs too, but some of those got traded off for parts to upgrade a few of the above so it's ok.

mmm my overkill machines..

Ti-85 I was like one of the first people with that calculator... while everyone had a 81 man.. i had a black 85!! i was the pimp!
I got it because my teacher told us, it was overkill!!!

(ummm i never understood how to fully use it... oh i program'd tetris on it, but does that count? )

I used a gigantic stock QX9650 heatsink on a dual-core S775 Celeron lol 🙂

Once I also used a Delta 92mm fan on a solid copper thermalright heatsink for a lowly Duron 750 as well. Pointless but effective, probably didn't even need the fan on that.

I have an ultra 120 extreme on an underclocked Q9450
allows the system to have no fans cept the psu fan

the loudest component in the system is the old 80GB hard drive
hopefully we get some good black friday/cyber monday deals on SSDs ...

My only overkill is Corsair HX 750 PSU - I bought it for planned GTX 470 SLI while Seasonic X-560 would be much better choice.
