Who else is waiting to build a DDR rig and why?

MichaelD

Lifer
Looking for info and opinions on why folks are waiting to build a DDR rig. I'm sure lots of folks will say "NForce"; me too, but I'm not looking forward to it's release as "The Second Coming" or anything like that. I really like the stability of the AMD 760 chipset, but that SiS has some butt-spanking performance, BUT ECS isn't exactly a household name either. Argh. Talk to me, AT!

Don't want to upgrade till AMD ups the FSB ante:|
I'll stop waiting when the Palomino's are sitting on an nforce 333mhz fsb with some dual channel crucial PC2700 ddr memory, with USB 2.0, and ATA-133.

Seriously.....do you think that you will notice the few percent difference between the AMD760 and the Sis735?
If you do and don't like ECS, then by all means wait a few weeks...MSi's Sis735 board should be out in short order, I'm sure Asus's won't be far behind.

But really, I doubt you will notice a couple percentage difference. I'd just get an Epxo 8K7A now (I have nothing against the ECS Sis735 board, but I'd want overclocking and tweaking options).

Well, I used to say to wait for nForce benchmark's just to see, but now with a mobo maker saying that it's delayed months, I'd say go SiS 735. As for which mobo, like somebody said, MSI's K735 Pro will be out very soon, and Asus A7S266 will most certainly follow, but I will mention that while us Enthusiasts don't use ECS mobo's much, they are very much so a Household name, they're the 2nd. largest mobo maker in the world behind Asus. They're products allways have been 3 things: stable, high performing, cheap, the only problem being no ocing options, but still. They will allways be one of the best in my mind.

I did not know Nforce was going to be delayed I remember Anand mentioning benchmarks of it under NDA ( socket A roundup) so i thought the boards were done and should ship soon. I am waiting for the Palomino or maybe Northwood (not really DDR but RAMBUST 🙁)
+ SIS. I could end up waiting forever most likely the Athlon 4 + SiS/Nforce combo though.

No, nVidia says it won't be delayed. Sorry I don't have a direct link but it was posted in a few messages a while back.

As for me, I have a P200 and I'm waiting to upgrade because of new technologies coming out by next summer. Also, my parents won't let me upgrade until next summer, after I've finished high school. 🙂

I`m waiting afew months I`m currently building a 2nd PC and am going DDR so am watching the memory prices and waiting for both Palomino and boards from SiS735 ,nForce and the new Via KT266 stepping before I decide which chipset, anyway my current KT133 board(MSI K7T PRO) is serving me well right now, but I feel a 2nd PC is handy for transferring files and I can use my old one has backup.

I just got the Black full tower version with door similar to ANTEC SX1240 (it`s the Chieftec one) and have fitted a 431w PSU Enermax, 6x80mm fans,1x92mm fan ,black Pioneer DVD 106s and black floppy drive,I love building bit by bit and lucky I`m patient person 🙂.One thing for sure I`m going with MSi or Epox brand wise 🙂.

Hey, good replies from lotsa good guys! Thanks for your opinions and suggestions. They have been filed in the "review before purchasing" file of my small brain.

I went ahead and bought 512megs of Crucial PC2100. Price was too good to resist. Kinda building the new rig a little at a time. I should've specified in my original post that I'm also waiting for the Desktop Pally (aka Athlon4) to be released. Even though it's supposed to debut at only 1.2GHz, it'll use 25% less juice than the 1.4GHz "C" Athlon does now. That equals less heat. My current 1GHz rig heats up my small room in about 30 minutes flat. I won't need the house-heat come this winter! 🙂 So, a reduction in power consumption will be a welcome addition.

Of course, once the Athlon4's are out, the price on current TBirds will prolly drop even lower than they are now in order to get rid of "old stock.".

I'm stuck on Abit, you guys know that. I'm still waiting for AT to review it. Eveyone else raved about it, but I don't trust "everyone else!" PC2700 (333?) is coming, but then mobo manufacturers will have to support it. That'll be late in 2002 at the earliest, most prolly. I think PC2100 will be the DDR standard for awhile. Anyone else care to contribute any comments/opinions?

Oh, well truthfully, I think I should keep my mouth shut about nForce, with all this that's coming around, I should only post about what nVidia says. Well, just fyi Northwood will be here in october at 2 and 2.2GHz according to Intel roadmaps I've read, by then SiS 645 may be shipping, and hopefully there will be P4X266 boards out.

I will build a DDR rig for a 1gig Athlon or Duron here soon. I think i'll go with SIS 735. I dont think much of ECS, but they are really starting to improve. I am interested in their 735 board. 65$ for a premium performance board.

Im building this rig for my family and overclocking will not be an issue, but cost will. ECS 735 board plus 1 gig Athlon or Duron + plus a 50$ case w/ps + Lite on DVD + 30 gig 5400 + 256meg 2100 = sub 400$

I'm wating because of this simple fact I have a 1.2Tbird running at 1.42 ghz on an Iwill KK266-R. This is way too much speed for me now. I mainly apps for school(Word, Excel, Power Point, ect..) and Play games. I play Counter-Strike Mainly. I get 100fps and no lag from my PC. I may get more PC133 ram if I find more that will do 150mhz cheap(under $20). Until I see more improvements besides memory speed or I get sick of VIA, I am staying where I am. I would rather invest in a better sound card or video card, but then again what i got is ok for now too 🙂

SiS boards shipping are you serious. I thought that would screw Intel up with their Rambust deal. Since Intel's DDR offerings arent supposed to hit till Q3 of 2002

<< it's supposed to debut at only 1.2GHz >>

Nope, the Desktop Paly is debuting at the end of September at 1.53GHz, current Paly's are at 1 and 1.2GHz but they are MP's, Desktop Paly's will be cheaper. As for Abit, well KG7-RAID is one great board, and KR7-RAID is going to use KT266A (New stepping) and it should be a great board also.

<< PC2700 (333?) is coming, but then mobo manufacturers will have to support it. >>

Wrong again! I know this is for P4, but VIA is releasing P4X333 in Q4'01, and SiS 645 will support DDR333 and is coming Q4'01 also, and Athlon chipsets supports DDR333 will follow soon there after, the one Athlon that is known will support DDR333 is Crush 17/18 (Sampling in Q4'01, out Q1'02). Crush117/18 will support DDR333 and have a GF3 MX integrated Core. 17 will not support Twinbank, 18 will.

EDIT: And about 645, it's supposed to go into volume shipments by Q4 and boards will be fairly soon after.

Athlon4all,

Yep. I've been kinda following Northwood from a distance. 2.2GHz, with normal PC2100 sounds great to me, but at what price? I just can't see spending $300 on a CPU...and currently TBirds are the price/performance leader over the P4. But then again, competition is a good thing. Intel recently slashed prices in order to keep from losing more market share to AMD...they might do it again! Good suggestion....I keep an open mind.

<< but at what price? >>

Well who knows how greedy Intel will get, but Northwood will be manufactured on the new .13um process so it will be much cheaper to produce and that will reduce prices significantly, how much, unknown, We will have to wait and see.

EDIT: I really don't know mchammer, all I know is SiS is supposed to ship 645 in volume in Q4, it all depens on how long mobo makers will take ot make 645 boards, it should be fairly quick considering their hesitation on making P4X solutions so they will want to have DDR boards in their line up so I couldn't tell u.

EDIT 2:

<< I wonder why 1530, and not 1500 or 1550 >>

Well because Paly uses a 133MHz fsb so the multiplier has to be either 11 or 11.5 or 12, etc. and 11 u would get an irregular speed of 1.463GHz, but at 11.5 u get about 1.53 and they do that allready with the 1.33GHz athlon, multiplier of 10, and a speed of 1.333GHz.

Athlon4all,

Wow. Thanks for the schooling! Between numbers at work, numbers at home, numbers at the second job and numbers from this hobby, my brain gets "numbered"!! 😱 😀 Thanks for setting me straight.

Wow, 1530MHz; I can deal with that! I wonder why 1530, and not 1500 or 1550...."stretching" the capabilities, maybe? I wonder what the MSRP is? Good stuff coming! I'm glad I'm waiting!!!!

I am waiting for good DDR SDRAM to come down in price, not that 2.5-3 CL junk you see for 20-40 dollars. I want good quality 2-2-2 speed sticks, and they are still a bit pricey. Why build a system based on fast DDR memory then put slower performing CL3 in?? It does not make sense.

From what I've read right here in GH Forum, Micron PC2100 CAS 2.5 will run reliably at CAS2. This is what I plan on doing. Mushkin sells their High Performance PC2100 that's rated at CAS2, but it's twice the price of a stick of Crucial. When everyone is running their Crucial at CAS2, why pay extra for other memory that has the same performance?

I will be very shocked (and pissed off!) if my PC2100 doesn't run CAS2. I would bet money that it will, though. After all, it's Micron, the Good Stuff.

I'm waiting to see how nForce pans out, along w/ the new revision of SiS735 and Via KT266. I recently bought 384MB of Crucial DDR Pc2100 just for a DDR board. Now, we'll let all these guys duke it out and see who comes out on top <g>.

I still believe I am going to hold out for the mushkin memory to come down in price. I would enjoy pushing my FSB to speeds of 150+ and still retain the ability to run at 2-2-2. I am not sure if that will be possible, but I am assuming if it is the mushkin high performance would be the memory to accomplish this. This mushkin SPD is programmed at 2-2-2, however the crucial is 2.5-3-3 (I believe, correct me if I am wrong) So on most motherboards using the crucial merely changing to the CL2 setting would still only give 2-3-3. However on all motherboards using the "select by SPD" setting the mushkin will give a 2-2-2.
I'm not really arguing, 39 bucks for 256 megs of ram is rediculously cheap, and well worth the price, as I said before I'd want to puch the system to the max so i'll wait for the CL2 to reduce in price.

1. waiting for nforce
2. ecs sis 735 board isnt super overclocker friendly (only a few fsb settings)
3. msi sis 735 board offers better overclocking, but not as high performance as the ecs

doh! i havent decided. if ecs will give an update to the bios which gives better fsb speeds ill get it. if msi makes an update that improves performance ill get it. or maybe ill just get the epox 8k7a

4. waiting to see what amd does next week after intel drops prices. going to see if they do another price drop.

Waiting for better mobo's and more of a selection of good mobo's. I'm also waiting for prices to drop even more..

Sal
