In some cases, new cars are cheaper in the long run.

The smart people will determine on a case-by-case basis which category they fit in. The rest will just choose one option for all situations and brag about it.

If I'm buying a domestic that is 50% off it's MSRP a year later, I'm definitely buying used.

Can't paint every purchase with the same brush.

Exactly. A 2005 Civic and a 2007 Civic cost just about the exact same amount of money. One is new and has the full warranty the other does not. I'm assuming most of the posters above would take the 2005 Civic. I'll take the 2007 and laugh at them.

I bought my last car new, but then I paid under $20k for a car I plan on driving for atleast 8 years and 150,000 miles. Since then, I've moved and my milage dropped alot. So it'll be more like 10 years and 120,000 miles. (it's at 5 years and 85,000 miles now)

In most cases I consider it a silly waste of money to buy new - most (and thats just where my priorities are). There are some cases where it can be a good deal, you have to be careful though.

Time was, I had little money and lived in a big city. no car. Then we had a bit more money and moved to a small town. Cheap used car. Now we have a house and good incomes, so we good a good used car (still under 10K). Don't see any reason to spend more. Sure, newer cars are nicer, but there are so many better things to do with our money.

that's not you being smart, thats just you having different priorities. you already admitted that newer cars are nicer and some people are willing to pay more for that. that's not them being stupid, thats them having different priorities.

bought used vehicle 3 weeks ago.

2006 Acura TSX fully loaded with 4,300 miles for $29K in cash. I think I did good.......

xm satellite radio for 12 months free, mp3 connectivity, blue-tooth, built-in navigation, tan leather, moonroof, xenon lights, 2-driver customizations, homelink, etc.

bottomline: still get a very nice car but a couple of thousand dollars below what I would get from a new-car dealership and have saved the cash to pay it at the spot.

I just bought a new van. My wife wanted one and our family is expanding. I got a pretty good deal and they threw in free leather seats and DVD player on top. I got 0% financing. This make will hold it's resale very well. So in the end, I went for it. We needed the space and I got a good year end deal. Typically I keep my cars for 10+ years, but in this case I am going to sell my 3-yr old Highlander, which itself has high resale value. So in my book it's all good.

I got an 18,000 mile care a while ago... it was $13,000. It still looked new and had a warranty going to 36,000 miles, or 3 years, whichever came up first. No idea what it would have cost new, but probably a lot more. My dad got a "driving around" car that's 10 years old, but was only $3,500. It came with a V6 and was one of those mass produced police cars that had the colors reversed and sold to the public.

Why buy a new car when you can buy one that's 1-2 years old and half the price? Totally makes sense to shop around and buy used.....unless you make more money than you can spend.

My wife and I look for "almost new" cars.

I purchased my 2001 Ford ZX2 in November of 2001. It had one previous owner who never made a payment and got it repoed right away. Only had 3,100 miles on it and got it for $11,690 (same car with same options was $15,000 at the time).

Our 2000 Taurus we purchased in September of 2004. It had 35,000 miles on it and was taken care of nicely. Got it for $7,700.

Both are paid for and each have barely over 50,000 miles on them now.

QFT. I have never owned a new car, but my wife is on her 4th in our 25 years of marriage. It is not about the money for me, it is about the value. I don't receive the utility (value) in owning a brand new car myself, but I do receive the utility in buy my wife a new car (if you know what i mean).

I looked at a Swift Sport for about $27K onroad (Australian). It was nice enough, but I thought, man for that money I could get a sweet car! Ended up getting my Dec '98 model MR2 GT w/ only 50,000 kms on the clock in perfect original condition for $25K instead.

So, not too cheap, but you get way more for your money second hand! My MR2 was like $60K new.
