What gets me is the people who can function on four or five hours better than I can at eight. Losing the genetic lottery's a bitch.

Anyone can adjust their sleep patterns... It won't happen in a week though!

It can and does take years to alter your body's ability to function on a certain amount of sleep... I'm at the point where I can't tell the difference between 6-10 hours of sleep in my day-to-day activities. Less than 6 hours and I start to feel it... So midnight to 6am is good for me!

Pick an amount of sleep, and STICK TO IT. Whenever you go to bed, set your alarm 6.5 hours after... If you do that for a week it'll make no difference, but if you do it for 6 months, your body will become accustomed to it.

That's how my neighbors wake up at 4:30am every single day, that was her shift for 10+ years and that's just how it works now!

It's silly to look at our habits from a perspective of sunlight vs activity.

Lights on! Move around and find something to eat!
*click*
Lights out! Zzzzzzzz....

Lights go out, and we lose consciousness.
Errata: Hallucinations and temporary paralysis may occur during this time.

(Interestingly enough, I don't know many people who make a "zzzzzz" sound when sleeping.)
Alas, I'm 29 now and my ideal amount of sleep is still 10-12hrs. This damn brain sucks at doing efficiently whatever it does when it's sleeping. :\

I need several years and a small research grant:
Breed fruit flies in a light-controlled environment. The duration of the night will be reduced at a rate of approximately 1 second per generation. I want to see if I can create a breed of things that don't need to sleep at all, and if so, what would be the effect on their lifespan?

The next research grant: Genetically engineer humans so that they don't require sleep.

Next research grant: Decompile the human genome and figure out how to recode it from scratch to fix the numerous flaws. :D

My newsletter will be available in Q4 2012.

I LOVE sleeping. It's pretty much the one thing I look forward to in the day. I do wish it was less time consuming, but still, sleep is amazing and wonderful.
