Who Else Has What is Deemed- "Rare Blood Type"?

Just recieved a message that a co-worker has advanced breast cancer, and will need lots of blood for a hastily scheduled surgery.
She needs O-Neg, which is my type. I just never knew this is considered a rare type of blood. I always thought those with O-type were universal donors, able to give to anyone. Apparently, this is not the case.
I now wonder about all the people with rare blood, and any unforseen emergencies. That would mean dangerous situations for those in trouble, not just here, but overseas as well, like our troops.
Anyone have any info on this?

O- is considered the universal donor, because every person can take O- in a transfusion.

However, they can only recieve O-. So people with this blood have to O- in a transfusion.

AB+ is considered the universal reciever, because they can accept any blood type in a transfusion.

That's a pretty interesting chart. I thought there were more AB+ than that. In Japan, there are a lot of AB+s. Supposedly, they tend to be more artistically creative.

Got O- here too. My brother needed a kidney/pancreas transplant to live, he was O-, needless to say he didn't get his kidney/pancreas...

I have AB+ and I assure you I have zero artistic/creative talent. Of course, I might be the exception to the rule!

My Bio teacher last semester told us something to the effect that people of type A or O were more resistant to the plague than B and AB people. Because many B and AB blood-type people died of the plague, it is assumed that this the reason there are more O and A blood-type people in Western Europe and by consequence North-America.

Ummmm... I'm AB+ and I think I'm doing well when I can draw a straight line

I'm O+ but apparently i don't have some very common disease which means that i can donate to cancer patients and other severly weakened people

Thanks for the responses. That chart was very informative. The theory about AB types being more susceptible to the Plauge was very astute. Some 75 million people died in the Middle Ages; if the majority were AB types, then that would explain the preponderance of O types here in the US. (After colonization)
My co-worker is in real jeopardy. They have put a call out to all employees (about 850 of us) for O- type. To my understanding they have a goal set aside for the amount, with some in reserve. We'll see.......
Kanalua: Sorry to hear about your brother.

<< O positive is the universal blood type..that is what I have >>

It's been years since I learned in biology what the + or - means but I also am an O+

<< My blood's red. That's all I know.
Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Really? Mine is warm too. Everyone else I know is cold-blooded like lizards! 😉

I'm B-pos, which I've been told is rare, but I'm not sure if that's rare in the human population or just that there are low quantities where I am.

O-negative here. I always thought this was wierd since my mom and dad are A and B respectively. I guess the 0 blood type is a recessive trait or something.

Edit: I remembered that I was negative RH factor, not posiitive.

A and B blood types ARE dominant. Since you're parents are A and B phenotypes and you are O, then your parents must both be heterozygous of genotype OA and OB.
