Who else has to touch grass to feel alive?

Work has been a shit show. Customers all over the place, internally things are a mess.

I took 20 minutes while WFH today to go outside and dig up/redistribute an inexplicable pile of dirt left by the previous owner between 2 of our pines in the backyard. Immediately, I felt like a new person. Like I had purpose. Like what I was doing made a tangible difference. The shined brighter. My gum tasted mintier.

IDK what the point of this thread is. Maybe a PSA? Feeling blue? Go touch grass.

That's basically my life. My down time is planted in front of a computer. Yesterday I saw a wild turkey, a fox, and a bunch of horses. Also saw this amazing Sycamore...

Yea, yea. All sycamores are amazing, but I also saw this cool creek...

This weekend I did treework at an 18th century house, and talked a bit to the old guy that owns it. He's a wooden ship builder. As in large old school sailing vessels. Showed pics from around the world where he built ships, or gathered exotic supplies for the craft.

I couldn't handle a desk job. Every once in awhile is ok, but going to a box every day would be demoralizing.

I'm out in the forest hiking and running five days a week, 2.5-5 miles depending on the day. Saw my first trillium of the season on Saturday morning. Doing yardwork doesn't move me though. When a stranger goes out of their way to tell me they liked the way I performed a song, that's fulfilling.

I'd love to see the northern lights. They came down this far once. I was actually living in that "city" at the time. I walked down to the water to see if I could see them, but nothing. They either didn't make it, or light pollution drowned them out.

Being in nature is healing. Always feel really bliss when I go in the forest or even in local trails. What I like about living in a small city is that it's not far from nature and I don't feel as disconnected from it.

I love your property and I'd be jealous if it wasn't about 40 degrees colder than I could tolerate. I want to find 10 or so acres in the middle of the woods. I wish they'd have had Starlink when I bought my house - I could have gotten that or something close to it.

What's cool is I actually get a cell signal where I am, so eventually I'll put a tower and setup a cell booster or 4G modem or whatever. The signal is spotty but it does work and I can even make a phone call. Will eventually get starlink when I move there so I don't have to worry about the data cap.

Still lot of work to do before I can move there though. Our summers are so short so there is only a short window where I can actually get to it. Once I do move there I will want a tractor or plow truck to keep the road plowed.

How many acres is it? I'm still too close to St. Louis for land to be cheap, and this is one of the most affordable metros in the US.

I have 40 acres, so pretty nice chunk. Cost around 45k all in so was a pretty good deal. Getting much harder to find such land now, there's more and more people who want to get out of the city it seems.

This was one of the sites I used to keep an eye on, but ended up finding it on MLS.

You don't have woods, you chopped them all down. You are never going to build that place anyway.

Go touch grass.

These are not exclusive propositions, I live literally across the street from a forest, there's fantastic parks all around Seattle, and you don't have to travel far at all to get to wider expanses of nature.

It is really this simple. There are many cities with excellent access to nature, as well as nature intertwined in them. Seattle seems like one of the best. Denver, and others, are also amazing.

North Jersey is up there for me. Access to the greatest city in the world. Drive west a lil bit, you are at the Delaware water gap and lots of other nature options. Drive north shortly, and you are at places like Harriman State Park so quickly. Have done a few one night overnight backpacking trips there. Drive south a little bit, you have beaches and the ocean. Shit, I have ridden my bike and taken the ferry to Far Rockaway and gone swimming there. And that's in NYC.

I find it hilarious when people from the midwest shit on NJ. It's amusing.

And yes, in cities we have parks too. I live near several. My dog checks the peemails there every day.

Nope. But if you really have to, get some wheatgrass seeds and plant them in a pot and put it on your table. You can touch it when you feel the need.

I live next to a wooded area, been in there a few times. Meh.

City parks don't scratch the same itch for me personally. Apartment living is absolutely out of the question and I need room to do stuff in my yard. I'm not knocking city people, it's great that parks and transit exist and I'm all for funding them, but some people just don't want to live in the city no matter how you dress it up. I've got a coworker who lives in the heart of a big city and adores it - all the things he needs in a house are things I loathe and vice versa. We joke about it from time to time.

"That guy's crazy for wanting to live there!"

You can cut the sexual tension with a knife

There is one near my house. I get deers visiting my driveway, not to mention smaller critters.

I'm glad getting outside and working with your hands while interacting with nature made you feel better. It is more important than a lot of people give it credit for.

If it made you feel that much better you should think about maybe getting into gardening. I know that term encompasses a lot but remember you can always start small. A few small pots of marigolds or petunias on the patio might give you that same feeling. They are easy to take care of and can be rewarding as you watch them grow.

Even indoor plants can lift your mood. Indoor gardening is a real thing and you don't need to invest a lot to get started. You mentioned you WFH so maybe try placing a few plants around your home office or even around the house in general. Start with something easy like a pothos or a philodendron.

That's the plan at some point. We love on about an acre, so I'm already spending 2-3hrs per weekend cutting the grass (John Deere S240 master race). I'd love to get some raised beds put in the back for vegetables and herbs. Would definitely need to critter-proof it with all of the deer and other wildlife in the area.

I've got a whole gaggle of indoor plants, my Tradescantia nanouk plant has turned from one pot to several pots over the last few years. My mini monstera took a while to really get going, I got that one in a somewhat unusual deal where the tattoo studio above the plant store was having a cross-promo where you got 10% off plants the day you got a tattoo 😛

I need to get some indoor plants for my office. But I don't have windows and suck at keeping plants alive. Was thinking of finding some succulents I could get that won't require too much care and see how they do in here.
