Last year our property was assessed at $165K...just got the new appraisal for this year's assessment and it went up to $173K (which means our estimated property tax amount for this year is gonna be over $4k - it was $3.8k last year)...

one of the joys of homeownership (around Dallas, Tx) I guess...

i got a card in the mail from the assessor last week

but it doesn't give prior info (we just bought the house last year), so i don't know if it went up down or sideways

i actually would be happy if it went up, this county is dirt poor/cheap. the voters didn't approve a new jail that is very badly needed last fall. most side roads are still gravel/dirt, a few paved roads in 2005 seems reasonable to me :disgust:

don't trust the results of one who gains from overvaluing your property.

Ours goes up 5% every year, I know thats how much it goes up because that is the cap that it can go up.

A few years back the state decided to "protect" us by limiting the amount our property appraisals could go up in 1 year, they capped it at 5%. So now without fail it goes up 5% every single damn year.

I want to write them a letter asking if they will pay that for it. I would make out like a bandit.

By the state or by like sales in your area?

oh, hehe ...

sales in the area.

guess it's off topic

sweet...

Then again, it's Southern California

considering what our house started at, doubling in value is amazing

i was thinking of moving to areas around Dallas at some point if property values stay low(as compared to Miami, where theres no way ill ever be able to afford a house)

my mom lves in Denton(is denton the county or city?) outside of dallas and theyve got a 4500 sq ft home that they only paid like 220-240k for

you never get a house like that in this area

heh, the question is could you purchase what you have today for the same price or will you get much more for similar location?

Fight it.
My company does work specifically for people who are trying to fight their tax assessment.

Always fight your assessment. There's no penalty for losing. And if you win this year, that helps in future years as well due to the cap.

I live in Denton County...our house is 1900 sq ft and we paid $165k for it in Nov 2003...
there are 2300 sq ft homes in our neighborhood that are going for around $190K-210k...

Its that creepy Texas thing where the garages are in the back in an alleyway. ;)

Well, thats the only place I havce seen it, just seems odd to me. I would guess that it is quite liveable since the wonderful Texas citizens havent revolted against developers.

still only 86 bucks/sqFT. are housing prices really that low in dallas?

Here in louisville KY a nice lot will run you 80-110K for about an acre.
