I think it was one of those "we'll see how it goes, if it tanks we'll wrap it up in a few episodes" things. The producers were blindsided by the show's popularity and they were still shooting episodes during the season last year.

I know what's in the hatch . I couldn't resist and read a spoiler. The only problem with knowing now is we have to wait two more weeks to find out more about it - next week's episode isn't supposed to be about the hatch.
