my buddy has an old 3 cycl geo metro.............
I was actually considering an old metro. Their gas mileage is insane. The XFi (engine detuned from 55 HP to 49 HP) is EPA rated for 51mpg highway. People have been known to get that up to 60 mpg.
However, it does take
~20+~ seconds for it to get to 60mph which can make freeway merging difficult. Also, if you are in an accident, you'll probably be dead or in the ER.
Not a completely worthless car by any stretch of the imagination though.
Fixed
I drove one of those, and reaching 60 was an event. That was in the early '90s as well, it's probably rare to find one of those cars in good shape by this time.
My wife had a '95 3cyl Metro when we met. Drove the hell out of that thing, and yes, 20 secs to 60, downhill, with a tail wind and no a/c.
Replaced it with a new Jetta TDI about 6 years ago (similar mileage). The funny thing is that my father in law, who owns: a classic fastback Mustang, a 2007 F150 king cab 4x4, a 2005 Lincoln LS (stick, actually kinda fun to drive), and a bigass 2007 Caddy (his wife's daily driver) , drives the Metro as his everyday driver. He loves the thing. I have no idea why anyone would willingly put up with it at this point, but he swears by it. I forgot to mention that the roof lining fell out, he stapled it back up, and its now coming unstapled, the radio is broken, the windshield and the dash are cracked, and the last time I rode in it, it sounded like the CV joint was done. Oh, and it leaks oil, and has badly corroded off-brand chrome rims that the previous owner/wannabe thug installed. "Rollin' on 13's Yo!!"
My favorite is when he strapped a surf board on it and drove to the beach to get some waves in. A bad wind storm rolled in and half buried the wheels under sand, and he had to get towed out (remember, this man owns a 4x4 "fun" truck for offroading)
He actually drives that thing to his job - he is a project/field manager in the Nuclear Energy industry. I can't imagine what his employees think. "Eccentric" might be the nice way of saying it.
