Who do you think was the greatest American President?

theodore roosevelt or woodrow wilson. they were both foreign policy gurus. probably roosevelt since he didn't segregate washington.
 
William Jefferson Clinton of course. What a great, great President.

I'd vote for Franklin D. Roosevelt. He led the country through the most difficult times of the 20th century (Depression, WWII).
 
Ronald Reagan: for ending the Cold War and preparing the U.S. economy for its longest period of expansion in over half a century.

The greatest Man who held the office of President was Teddy Roosevelt. The term Much of a Man certainly applies.

Probably the greatest accomplishments while in office belong to Thomas Jefferson, if for the Louisiana Purchase alone.

As far as Lincoln, I would suggest you read The Real Lincoln

Very difficult question for me. But I would say that both of the Roosevelts are among the best ever.
 
there's a big difference with a president who actually did stuff and a president who had 'great things' happen while he's in the office.

I am sure that when you wrote your political science PhD thesis, you debunked the claims that Reagan brought down communism and for once and for all (until China gets up to speed) established the U.S. as THEsingle world power.

But I'll say Clinton.

I don't know how you can choose just one as the best ever, but it sure as hell would never be Reagan, no matter what the fanboys tell you.

My votes are for Jefferson, Lincoln, Wilson, Hoover (j/k!), and FDR.

At the same time, Taft did the most important things after he was president. Sure, Carter builds houses with his free time, but Taft followed up his bathtub stuffing administration by being Chief Justice.

I wouldn't say Reagan either, but to call him a joke is outrageous. His policies shaped the world.

If I had to choose, it would be Jefferson - but that choice is influenced by a lot of things he did before being elected to office. He also had a lot of flaws - owning and having affairs with slaves for example...

FDR brought us out of the depression and made America strong, but he also turned us into a Welfare state.

So many choices, so many flaws...

Reagan was a good president, and didn't take sh!t from anybody. The terrorists released the hostages because they knew he would not sit on his hands like Carter did. He would have opened a can of whoop-@ss on them.

Not to mention the fact if there was ever any investigation of any kind you could never touch him. He could honestly say "I don't recall" and be the first to mean it. Poor man, alzheimers is an ugly, ugly disease.
 
I like Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, both Roosevelts and Reagan. Its been a long time since I studied my presidents so I don't know which one I think is best. I think Lincoln is overrated.

I believe Reagan to be the President with the most influence on my life so far. Carter is the earliest president I can remember.

George W. is setting himself up for a lot better spot in history books than Clinton or his dad will hold.
 
I have to say George Washington. He was one of the few who refused to be king or dictator for life. He gave us a peaceful transition of power when he stepped down for the next guy to take over. Too many countries torn by endless civil wars and conflicts when the leader of those countries refused to give up power volunteeringly.

Um...I think the truth behind the story is a little different than that. Reagan wasn't a bad president, but he didn't rescue the Jews from the Pharoh, defeat Goliath, or even free the slaves.

In the vote for Hoover, they actually named many "towns" after him. 😉

Pretty much any president can. Only Clinton DID.


My vote for the latter half of the 20th century is Reagan. No good argument can be made for any other when looking at what Reagan did for the world by bringing down the USSR.

Of others I'd go for Teddy Roosevelt, and Jefferson.
