toshiba a20 w/P4 3.2 w/HT, 512 DDR 3200, FX5600, 80GB, 802.11g, DVD+- is a phat machine for your price range.

HP is ok but I prefer toshiba and dell

Sager, IBM then Dell. Those are my top 3, in that order. That answers the question in your header. For gaming and $2500 you can count IBM out.

I also definately recommend IBM. Plus on their web site they have great videos showing you how to take apart the keyboard and stuff as well as very detailed part diagrams.

My 2nd choice is Toshiba.

IBM for build quality, then toshiba and dell (in that order) for slightly lower quality & support but more cutting-edge hardware (17" displays, ATI 9600 Pro graphics).

Get an alienware :)..only 500$ more for the super-hi end one ..you did say gaming :) ...if your willing to wait a month or two they will come w/ self-upgradeable video!! Yes, the user can change out video cards in 2 easy steps :)

If you're shooting for more pounds to the dollar, I think Toshiba has that title hands down :) My Tecra 8100 (PIII 700) has been flawless since new, but it is HEAVY! I would never recommend a 7+ lb notebook to anybody who actually has to travel with the thing.

IBM seems to be the best, but you pay for it, IMHO.

RE:" gaming with the laptop"

Sounds like an oxymoron to me. Maybe you could build a SFF.

Do any of them actually make latops? From memory, sagers are rebagged clevos. Forgot about the rest. BTW alienwares are clevos. Clevo makes the fastest laptops possible since they use desktop parts in them. I have a dell now.

I think the SFF would be a better portable solution for gaming, but this doesn't help on a plane for example :)

IBM then Dell. But you pay for the extra quality IBM puts into their machines. Dell are great for price/performance.

Most laptops are made by an ODM w/ the exception of IBM. There are several models of laptops that use desktop processors but not desktop "parts" in the sense that it is more than the processor. Your statement that Clevo is the best for that reason is false.
