ID - no question.
At equivalent image quality, ID will almost always have twice the frame rate.

ID, by far - their engines are the industry standards for third party games. Plus, they scale very well in both performance and features. Just compare the difference between the original Quake III engine and that used in Call of Duty to see. Hell, even Valve did a reworking of a combination of Quake I and Quake II engine code to produce the HL code.

YOu can get the same look as Unreal TOurny, but with twice the frame rate from ID's Quake 3 engine.

Yeah ID software makes the best engines, no doubt.

Do you guys think Carmacks next gen engine will beat unreal engine 3 (for those of you who have seen the UE3 demo?)

Id. By far. Engine scalability. They started building engines not only for games but also for their community. That just naturally lead to engines that were licensed out a lot.

Certainly not. The Doom3 engine is going to be released this year. Epic's UE3.0 isn't destined for release in any games until 2006.

I think the question was who builds the best gaming engine, I too would have to say ID

BTW Q3 rocked as a multiplayer game.

Valve has has ONE entry into the market in engines... and it's one of the best ever made. ID is really good, but I really think Valve is better.

Valve's "Game Engine" was a heavily modified quake1 / quake2 engine. Hence why it was good. Unfortunatly, Valve screwed the pooch on their network code which sucks to this day in comparison to quakeworld.

How can you say valve is better? Valve's source engine looks almost ad good as Doom 3's but look how long it took valve to make that engine a few years. Carmack started in 2000 and the engine was Finished in 2001 (except when carmack added Fragment shader support when the R300 was out)
