I'm getting a firewall/router/webserver set up pretty soon, and I want a domain name. What's a cheap, good place to register the name with?

Also, are there any reserved domains I can use (and not be visible to the internet)?

When GoDaddy first got started, I had no end of trouble with broken code on their servers and aggressively clueless support people, but eventually I ended up getting ahold of Bob Parsons and he was able to get their programmers to fix the bugs. Once in a while, I've still had to talk to their support people and get one thing or another straightened out with their functions (usually it's a case of bulk operations weirding out), but everybody's been much more helpful and effective than they had been early on.

I'm not sure I understand the question. GoDaddy does have a service that allows you to register a domain but keep your identity private, but that doesn't sound like what you're asking about. Do you mean some kind of domain equivalent to a private-use IP? Or?

Like 192.x.x.x is reserved for private use. I can call my computer that with no problems.

Is there something like "domain.com" that I can use?

oh, i think i get what you're saying...what you could do on the client computers is this:

all the computers on your LAN you can open up the "hosts" file which is in the system32/drivers/etc folder and if you make it like this:

x.x.x.x server.com

x.x.x.x being the lan ip of the server, then I think that it will redirect the client-->server through server.com
