You know that its 2008 now, right?

I usually don't do this, but...

I'm tempted to call Microsoft support myself, just get one of their people to drive over to your house and bitchslap you.

j/k :p

Or am I...

Funny that you bring that up because of ALL THINGS, I can get both of those things FAR EASIER than getting previously released knowledgebase and updates from microsoft.

I wouldn't be QUITE so annoyed if this hadn't happened out of the blue, that I had warning, etc. etc. Another issue is, even if I did have warning, I have absolutely NO IDEA how one would backup their entire database relating to their legacy products and downloads. Since this has happened to Windows 95, I'm super worried now that it's going to happen to Windows 98 and I have no plan of action to take.

I want a website that has everything Windows 3.1, 95, 98 etc. related, in its simplist form an archive of the Microsoft Website pertaining to those products. I don't understand why doesn't microsoft have a page such as archive.microsoft.com or microsoft.com/legacy.... The biggest reason I care about having all the information pertaining to these older OSs is not only because I'm a bit sentimental but I'd like to keep all this stuff for historial record, reference, etc.

Out of curiosity.... what are your computer specs?

This is for a legacy machine that will be running multiple OS'. An NO I am not going to even consider using a virtual machine because it sucks for emulating games, programs etc. etc. Pentium I 150mhz 32mb Ram.

Op has a point. I have old boxes sitting around that would choke up trying to run XP or Vista. Not only is Microsoft killing off legacy OS products some users still rely on WORLDWIDE they are killing off all the old still working hardware that ran it. They are also killing off all the programs that may be not run without these OS, too. It's like killing the goose that laid the golden egg. It couldn't cost them that much to continue to support the files and links to download updates and software to support the stuff that made Microsoft untold BILLIONS of dollars. I'm still selling game and office software occasionally in my online store that ran on win 3.1 and 95, so the market and users are still out there, in spite of what MS may think about it.

And support in this context should mean troubleshooting or continuing to update legacy OS software, not simply maintaining a data base of old legacy updates and drivers and stuff. This is also the type of software they could get hosted free or nearly free elsewhere, if they just want to take it off their servers, too.

The problem here is you. They told you it was going off support. YOU failed to save copies of all available files.

Dude, you're still playing pong?

Good god, you can find better hardware at the recycling center, junkyard or on the sidewalk that someone discarded.

I can only imagine how awful this is going to be for those who will try to reinstall Windows XP but won't be able to because Microsoft shutdown their activation servers.

You have a point there.....I haven't ever thought about that.

phone call FTW.

Is it possible for a thread to be so full of fail that it becomes a thread of pure win?
