Microsoft isn't providing the 10+ year self-help support that they promised to their products. I'm very frustrated that when looking for downloads pertaining to Windows 95, I am unable to find them on the Microsoft website like I used to be able to. I know there are lots of updates, patches, add-ons, features, knowledge base, troubleshooting etc. that Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 had on Microsoft's site that is no longer there anymore. I can perfectly understand Microsoft no longer supporting older products concerning issues that haven't already been dealt with in the past or releasing future updates.

I've tried e-mailing Microsoft and all I get are responses that are no better than speaking to smarter child on AIM, except smarter child can spell properly.

I know at anandtech people think I'm a fool to be dealing with older products, that I'm an idiot, I should have Windows Vista, Vista is the future, legacy programs have no useful purpose, I should pay up and shut up, I'm being unreasonable, ungrateful little shit as Microsoft shouldn?t provide any support, but all I?m asking for is access to resources that are of little to no cost to them to maintain for a very substantial product.

I can only imagine how awful this is going to be for those who will try to reinstall Windows XP but won't be able to because Microsoft shutdown their activation servers.
 
You want to complain? I want to complain. Look at these shoes, I've only had them three weeks and already there's a hole worn through them.
 
Do you have a written contract saying MS will support your Windows 95 POS for 10+ years? Otherwise get out from under your rock and use software written this decade.

BTW, a lot of the stuff is still there, just not accessible from MS' crappy search engine. Use Google's site search (site:support.microsoft.com)
 
None of the downloads pertaining to Windows 95 work anymore, this is a recent occurance which is why it frustrates me because there is nowhere else for me to go. I can only scour the Internet for things I know off the top of my head but because there were so many updates for Windows 95 and 3.1, I can't think of them all and I'm really pissed off Microsoft would remove all the stuff pertaining to these OSs.
 
So let me get this straight.

You're upset they're not retroactively applying a policy, established in 2002, of support for at least 10 years on products that were availble through retail at that time. You're pissed off that Microsoft is discontinuing product support on an OS 13 years old, that wouldn't even still be supported even if the policy applied to it.

It's 2008, Win95 is way off of the ten year support list. Windows XP is a great OS today, but everyone said it sucked when it first came out. Vista once they get SP2, everyone will say VISTA rocks! And then... yeah, XP will die from support in 2012...

Although, I'm thinking Windows is going to release another version of Windows exactly identical to XP but with Vista security. Kind of like Millenium after 98 SE.

Hopefully it's not crappy like Win ME and that is, 'if'

EDIT: this should be the last year Windows 98 has updates released for it from Microsoft. 1998-2008 ... WOW, TEN YEARS OF '98 GLORY, how we all loved it when it first came out, rofl...

Funny that you bring that up because of ALL THINGS, I can get both of those things FAR EASIER than getting previously released knowledgebase and updates from microsoft.

Since this has happened to Windows 95, I'm super worried now that it's going to happen to Windows 98 and I have no plan of action to take.


I want a website that has everything Windows 3.1, 95, 98 etc. related, in its simplist form an archive of the Microsoft Website pertaining to those products. I don't understand why doesn't microsoft have a page such as archive.microsoft.com or microsoft.com/legacy.... The biggest reason I care about having all the information pertaining to these older OSs is not only because I'm a bit sentimental but I'd like to keep all this stuff for historial record, reference, etc.

To answer your question, end of support means exactly that. End of support, you don't get any.

Out of curiosity.... what are your computer specs?
