So who did the original version of that Cantaloop song before US3 went and remade it. I LOVE that song.

GOOGLE is your friend:
Us3's "Cantalooop (Flip fantasia)" is a version (accelerated but more or
less acurate) of the Herbie Hancock's classic "Cantaloupe Island", from the
Blue Note album "Empyrean Isles" , catalogue number B2-84175, with Freddie
Hubbard, Ron Carter and Anthony Williams.

I'm now hearing both versions. The original is good, very good, but cool,
jazzy (jazz any way you look at it) and slow. Nothing to do with the uptempo
trumpet of the "Cantaloop" song. It's something like a 33-45 r.p.m. change.

The trumpet for the Us3 version is played by Gerard Presencer, in case you
don't have the liner notes.

By the way, you can find all the sampled song for the Us3 album "Hand on the
torch" on the Blue Note double album "Straight no chaser" (CDP 7243 8 28263
2 3). Very nice, indeed.
FYI - Everything on that album is sampled from Blue Note Records's recordings...
