slot loads seemed to be plentiful in the past, NEC etc
anyone know of something other than the pioneer DVD series?

Christmas is a time to reflect...

Pioneer is the only one. I have used them for my CD drives for the past 3-4 years. Now have replaced them with DVD slot drives.

Once you use a slot, you want no part of those "coffee cup holders." 🙂
My car CD players also have slots. I think Pioneer makes them as well.

I just bought an Aopen DVD Drive from Newegg. It has not arrived yet, so I can't give you my opinion yet. However, this slot loaded DVD drive got some very good reviews on many websites.

Here is Newegg's photo of the drive.

The only reason I chose this Aopen drive over Pioneer's is because of the color. Call me "ANAL", but I do not want to mix a pure white colored CD/DVD drive with my other drives, that are beige.

Anyway, there is another slot loading DVD/CD drive other than Pioneer.

I don't like AOpen optical drives. I've had many bad experiences with their CDROM drives
so I am hesitant to try their DVD drives.

THat is good to know about AOpen and a slot drive! Once the makers see that there is a growing market of slotters, they will come around.

As for color, my Pioneer slots are beige . . . same color as all the other drives and panels. Never seen a white one. Black would be cool! 🙂

One warning...if a CD gets stuck in a slot drive, it's a lot harder to remove (happened to my mom's old Compaq); there usually isn't the "paper clip hole" on slot drives.

If I'm not mistake, it's actually the same drive. I was looking around for a firmware update for my slot loading 16x Pioneer DVD and found an Aopen update and ran it. My drive was then shown as an Aopen drive. I flashed back.

OH, don't get me wrong.. I love the Pioneer DVD
I was just hoping for somthing cheaper for a mobile application I had in mind...

Dave (who is told he even looks like santa with his glasses on...)

HI-VAL used to have a rebadged Pioneer 104s. I had one I bought from CompUSA and it had Pioneer 104s written on it. In my new computer I have a Pioneer 106s which is a lot quieter and works great. Too bad no one makes a slot-load CD-RW drive! I hate trays and even worse, caddies! How come Pioneer doesn't make a slot-load CD-RW or DVD-RW?

I just don't understand companies and people that stick with tray drives. It is so much more easier to slip a CD into a slot-load. And you don't have to worry about a flimsy tray breaking! All in-dash car CD players are slot-load. You can't even find the Pioneer slot-load DVD in retail stores like Best Buy or CompUSA!!!! What's up with that?

I've seen the black ones before. One person was selling it on eGay. The others were being used by computer makers like Alienware and other makers that use black cases.
