Who cares what your post count is?

Postcount doesn't matter to me. I just browse the forums and when I feel the need to post, I post it. It has never been a race to me. It's just some people have/had a lot of free time on their hands compared to others.
Hahahaha. Anyways, I find it amusing that all of the people that either find posts important or don't care have thousands of posts already.

When you have nothing to go on besides the post count, join date, and the quality of the post you just read, yeah... it does make a difference.
Example: someone comes into General Hardware and says they want to build a computer for about $2500....
If this is their first post, I'm wondering if they know they can build one for $750 that will suit the needs of 99% of computer users out there. If someone comes in with 3000 posts, I assume they know what they're talking about and go right into some recommendations thinking they're just not up on the newest hardware.

This is quoted from the Apolyton Forum FAQ (version 2.1). As you can see here, the administrators do not consider the post count very important. How wrong they are! The post count is one of the most important factors in the UBB system. When new people enter the forum, they arent sure of what people are important, so they look at the titles. Of course, titles like "Moderator" immeaditly encourage people to arse-licking, but how can they see the most prominent people in the forums if the post count is not shown or altered?
Even in the modern times, it is still very important to give important people unnecessary praise to improve your own position. Accidentially giving an important poster a hostile comment can permanently endanger your position in the eyes of the rest of the Apolytoners. You might even ignite a flame war, and end up banned, only because you mistook that Emperor-level guy to a newbie. And even if you apologize, it will take you a very long time to repair your reputation. And no, you can hardly build an Eiffel Tower to aid your reputation here.
The admins are ruthless in penalizing spamming. There have been occasions when an Emperor-level poster has lost 50% of his posts. A high post count represents hours and hours of time spent posting. Even though the discussions are interesting in the short run, in the long run the only benefit is the fact that the poster gains more posts. When the admins delete posts, they take away hours, even days, of the victims life. Weeks that may have been spent posting are now inalterably gone, never to return anymore. What they do is not unlike kidnapping the victim and then returning him back to normal life a few weeks later.
The admins might defend the deletion of posts by the fact that posts that are spam are meaningless and only serve to reduce the quality of posting. True, and it is true that there should be penalties, but regardless a 50% post reduction is simply too much. A 10% reduction and a banning for a few weeks should be enough. If somebody keeps spamming, just keep banning him. He should learn the lesson after that last 5-year ban. And if he doesn't, nobody will remember him anymore when he returns - but by looking at the post count they can see that he has been at Apolyton before, and might remember to issue him a 10-year ban next time.
Some time ago, one of the admins (MarkG) made a little experiment with the script, so that posts in Off-Topic no longer increased your post count. Fortunately, the situation soon returned to normal, but this could have easily lead to a catastrophe. See, Off-Topic is the forum where the discussions with the highest intellectual level happen. There is some spam, true, but most of the discussions there are very diverse learning experiences. It is not rare that somebody presents an argument, and others correct him based on data that has a scientific backing. Valuable information can easily be gained from Off-Topic, and unlike in the other forums, the information is not limited to computer games. For civilizing others, the people who post at Off-Topic fully deserve their post count.
As I have explained, the post count system is vital to the Forums. I could easily come up with more facts to back this, but a line must be drawn somewhere. See you in my next column, and happy posting.
