Other than the fact that it's 5 hours from my hometown and there's a job opening there???

Anybody? ;)

How about Flint? What's it like?

Come on, surely you well-traveled folks have been there . . . or maybe somebody even lives there? It's right on the coast of Lake Michigan . . . ;)

I did the Google and Yahoo searches before I asked . . . I wanted some on the ground recon.

I did find out that this is pretty close to where they filmed American Pie 2, though.

Trust me, his town is tiny! The movie place is small and there's like nothing to do there. He can only go up from here. lol

Ludington is a small town on the conservative side of the state. I remember moving to Grand Rapids for a couple years and one of the first things people kept asking me at my new job after the introduction and obligatory 'niceties' was "what church do you go to?" Note that the presumption was I went to church, it wasn't conceivable to these folks that I might not go to church at all (the heathen that I am). I believe they called them "Dutch Reformed" or something...Michigan's Bible Belt.

Not a whole lot to do there, everyone is pretty much white except for some migrant workers (that is not to say they are racist or something, its just that it is a very white community and that can be a culture shock if you're coming from a more diverse upbringing), LOTS of farm land and the like. Luckily there IS a lot to do in the surrounding area, but its pretty much all outdoorsy type recreation (boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, walking, cycling, etc.). If you're looking for night life and that metropolitan element, you ain't gonna find it in Ludington.

But, if you like that sort of thing (small towns and burbs), and I do, Ludington is great. Friday night football, cheerleaders, homecoming queens, farm tractors, 4x4 trucks, county fairs, low crime, rhubarb pie, Aunt Bea and Opie...that sort of community. Its not for everybody, but then again, it is precisely these types of towns and communities that everyone is 'escaping' to from the cities.

Ah, Benton Harbor, always ranks among the top 5 cities in the US in terms of teen pregnancy and percentage of the population that are single mothers. Saugatuck (sp?) isn't exactly a conservative town, either. I learned the standing joke was "So, what do you have planned for the weekend...heading down to Saugatuck?" Everyone would laugh and I didn't know what they were laughing about until someone finally told me.

But, you can't define something by its exceptions. It is well-known that Michigan's west side is much more conservative than its east side, spare of a couple exceptions. The entire political "center" moves to the right as you move closer to Michigan's west side. Even the gays vote Republican...

Woot!

That beats NW Colorado girls who want you to take them hunting . . . or Steamboat Springs girls who do a credit check before they'll go out with ya. ;)

OK, there's also an opening in Flint, Michigan, which is obviously a much bigger town!

Is this the 'burbs of Detroit? Anybody on ATOT live there?

Flint is not the 'burbs of Detroit. Flint is an hour north. It's not exactly the nicest town, but I'm sure it has some decent suburbs of it's own. I've stopped in Flint several times (lived in metro Detroit for 26 years), but never took the time to look around.

Not the nicest town . . . as bad as Detroit?

I'm in Flint about half the year (go to school there). What do you want to know? It's not exactly the best city on earth, but i've seen worse. There are some nice suburbs, but not a whole lot to do around there unless you are the outdoorsy/country type. Detroit is not too far though and there's tons of things to do around Detroit.

Dude . . . there's a Best Buy in Flint. What are you griping about? ;)

I love it when people say where they live has not a whole lot to do . . . the town I live in is 250[/i] frickin' miles over STATE roads to the closest Best Buy. We have a K-Mart and a two-screen movie theater that is held together with duct tape. :p

Ok, Flint is better than where you live then. There are numerous movie theaters and best buys.

Umm...wow, you really do live in a small town huh? One good thing about Flint is that the cost of living is really low for being a relatively big city.

Go rent "Roger & Me". That will show what Flint was like in the late eighties, if that helps.
