Who can give me an overview of slot-loading CD-ROMs?

Hiya everyone, I really like how slot-loading CDROMs look and work, the tray has always seemed silly to me. Is there a reason there aren't more of them available, are there downsides to them? If not, which ones are good?

Thanks,

Well, the first reason that comes to mind is that with slot-loading your have more chances to scratch up your CD than just placing it in a tray. Just my two cents...

Is that true? I've had slot-loading cd players in my cars for 10 years and none of them have ever scratched a cd of mine.

1: They are more complex, so they can jam and cost more

2: The old ones sucked in dust and died like crazy (8X slot loaders compaq used)

3: Stupid people cant figure out what "slot" to use and end up with a pile of cds shoved in the crack between drive bays

My Pioneer (DVD) is a slot load and it's great. Not only is it a lot quieter but I no longer accidently snag the open tray as I've done a zillion times before. It's a wonder some of my old tray drives ever worked again after the abuse I have inflicted on them.

16x......it's so quiet. I quess it's because you don't have all that tray hardware rattling around and vibrating. Trays are so flimsy on CDroms....on my Yamaha SCSI burner though, the tray looks and feells like it should be part of a B-52!

Just about all slot load drives cannot load mini CDs.

Yeah that capability isn't really high on my list...I have 1200 CDs and only one is a mini-cd, and I bought that one because I had never seen one before. :p
