allofmp3 = probably illegal, certainly unethical, but people here hope it's "legal enough" to protect you from the RIAA.

The truly legal services sell protected WMA (Napster, Real, Buy.com, ...) or AAC (iTunes). To get unprotected MP3 you must burn a CD then re-rip it.

I use Napster, but only to preview music. I want lossless FLAC so if I like it I buy the real CDs and rip.

I prefer the comfort of iTunes. I keep all of my music on my computer anyways, so it being digital doesn't matter. Only thing that sucks is I can't directly share it with friends.

downloading mp3s from illegal sites is pretty risky.. like ive had friends complain about viruses, I think wal-mart has songs for 79 cents.. I just buy cds

But i may have to consider what episodic friend has done

Not probably illegal at all and it's certainly legal enough to protect users from the RIAA. I personally am very happy with that site and have downloaded about 10 gigs of music from them.

AllOfMP3 says it's .02 US per 1mb of download...

so if a song is 5mb big, it would only cost 10 cents US to buy the song? and if the whole CD was 50mb, it would only cost 1 dollar?

right. most songs are 10-12 cents US

That's because they don't pay any real royalties to songwriters, performers, or record companies.

Their claim to being legal is essentially based on being a "radio station" that is "broadcasting" the songs to you, so they only pay radio station listener fees instead of real sales royalties. They claim this is legal in Russia.

But hey, if you want to pay money for audio warez that's your choice.

i'd do it for my own collection, but I don't have the HD space for it (even though I have a small collection)
