FBI got their man. I wonder if someone is getting the reward ?
If you read the Boston Globe the last 20 years like me, you have probably read hundred(S) of stories on this gangster.

...and just when I was criticizing the FBI for wasting money running commercials about this guy who's been on the run 16 years and is 81...they catch him finally. Weird coincidence. Maybe the commercials worked but the guy IS 81...how long is he gonna last in jail, maybe a couple years...

wtf was he doing back in the country????

His FBI insiders can't help him as much outside of the country. I think he never left the country and Kevin Weeks was running interference. I'm pretty sure Whitey had some inside help to keep him one step ahead (even if that was the smallest of steps in some cases). Now that there is a new generation of FBI agents, that help finally dried up.

Do you remember Mike Barnicle's knob-polishing pieces on Whitey back in the day? He loved Whitey and painted him as a hero, protecting the poor and keeping the drugs and other gangs out of Southie. He even refused to call him Whitey (he called him James or Jimmy).

Heard that the television spots that they just ran on his GF was what nabbed him. I guess a woman saw the television spot, recognized Catherine Greig and called the FBI. They went to their apartment complex and he gave himself right up. I guess he had guns in the apt but gave up peacefully.

Can't believe he would stay in the US. Huge reward for the woman that called it in.

I'm sure Billy, his brother, was able to keep him informed on things. Both him and Barnicle are crooks themselves.

I can't help but think of all the resources it took to get him. The recent commercial spots especially. Not sure it was worth it with him being as old as he is

Tell that to the families of the 19 people he killed.

Hearing a story right now about how a buddy of his was dating two women and got sick of them. Whitey strangled both of them, cut off their finger tips and pulled out all of their teeth and dumped the bodies. Good guy!

Leaving the country causes all sorts of problems for fugitives.

I think he said that because he was last spotted in London in 2002. Which raises the next question...how the hell did he get back into the country being a MOST WANTED fugitive...

I'm not so sure the FBI wanted to apprehend him. At this point, anything he says about his involvement in corrupting the Boston FBI office is going to be hard to disprove. He can run an tremendous smear campaign against the FBI and, even if he doesn't, his arrest certainly brings one of the worst scandals in the organization's history to light.

I'm guessing you feel the same way about Bin Laden.

Bin Laden posed a continuing and active threat. Bulger was 80+ years old and not really a threat to anyone.

Not saying he didn't deserve to be caught, but there isn't much of a comparison between him and Bin Laden. I'd rather them use our tax dollars to go after guys like this than locking up potheads.
