White Van Scam...

I was at the Long Beach Towne Center going to Barnes & Nobles today, and as I exited my car, a dude in a white van yelled out, "Hey, need some speakers for your home?"

And I remembered all the posts I've read (not on this board, but on audioreview), and I instantly recognized this as a scam.

I said, "No thanks."

I SHOULD have said yes and seen what kind of scam they pull. That would have been pretty interesting.

Anyways, I took the make/model and liscense plate # of the van, and notified the police.

I was all excited today that this happened to me because I've read so much about this scam, and it actually happened to me. heheh

this scam ever happen to you?
 
it's happened to me like 3 times in Westwood. I always see them trying to sell them. It's always a white van, which is wierd. I know some guy who bought some, he said they were shitty, which was pretty obvious to me before he bought them. He was an asshole and sold them to someone else for more money than he paid for them. I guess suckers are born often 🙂

I have had it happen to me. Funny thing is that I was on a bicycle at the time. Where did they think I was going to put them? Oh yeah they said they would bring them to my house. Like I wanted them knowing where I lived.

The probably use white vans because the cheap base model vans are white.
 
It happened to me once LONG ago. At least 8 years. Probably 10 or more. Funny as hell. I was like, "Ummmmm....Well....I don't really think so....ummmmm...." I was speechless! They drove up so fast like they were in a stock car PIT STOP, and this guy almost came OUT of the van. I actually thought I was gonna be kidnapped. When I found out they were trying to sell me speaks, I was, well....CONFUSED. 🙂

So what's the scam? Do they just sell crappy speakers to you for a supposedly "bargain" price?

Very weird. I would have thought they'd get busted all the time by people calling the police.
 
i've been offered them at least 4 times here in the UK - why is it always speakers?

the first time they mighta got me, i was like 16 at the time, but broke as most 16yr olds are, so i was safe that time. By the time it happened again it was a well published scam, and now its always "No thanks" and walk away
 
It happened to me when I was about 24 or so. I remember it well as I was at the DMV and I told him I had no money. He told me I could go to the bank accross the street and get some. He told me he was on his way to set up for some band and when the warehouse loaded the speakers they gave him 6 pairs instead of just 6(3 pair). He also said they were "water cooled", what ever that is. Needless to say it took about 10 minutes to convince this jerk I wasn't intrested.

That's about it. Someone I know bought some. They showed him an &quot;invoice&quot; for 4x what he paid so that it looked like a good deal.

EDIT: It's unethical but I don't know exactly what's illegal about it. Does anyone have links to news stories about this?
 
Hehe yeah I guess in a way it ain't even illegal 🙂

I know plenty of salesmen who try to do the same thing everyday.
 
i got scammed alright--by a cheap sissy who can't pay $30 for a $100 camera HE BEGGED FOR. you're one to be talkin about a scam, you're the scam artist. you've got SOME NERVE to be starting a post like this.
