White square in my top left corner??!!!

Collider

I'm not sure when this appeared, but I noticed this white square in the top left corner of my desktop background. It?s about 5x5 pixels, always there, can?t click on it or anything else...

Scanned my comp for spyware... still there... don?t see any suspicious processes....

This is beginning to trouble me...

Anyone have any input?

Found the program that?s causing that dot. It?s the new ATI CCC (CCC.exe) that came along with the new 8.1 drivers.

Have yet to find out the purpose of that little square, but when I end task the CCC.exe it disappears as well.

Anyone have any insight on this??

Yep, well-known problem with 8.1 CCC.

You just have to close the taskbar icon (right-click, select Exit).

To make this change permanent (i.e. for every boot), you should go into CCC, under Preferences (at the top), and uncheck something that says "system tray icon" or such like.

in control panel see if you can access the prefrences and properties of it. if not you may have to uninstall and try installing a previous version.

Ahh I see.

But as far as drivers itself, 8.1 is legit rite?

I mean all my 3d aps seem to run ok..

Yeah, there is nothing wrong with using them, they are official drivers. Just a little bug with them that will be worked out in the next set of drivers, nothing to be alarmed over. 🙂

Thanks I had the same question. Thank god I found it on my favourite tech site.

I have both Nvidia and ATI cards and am not at preference to one or the other. But I have to say that the driver&software combination on ATI is disgusting. Absolutely awful in my opinion. Too big, needs .net2, crashes frequently. It's a shame, because the hardware is quite good. I hope they hire some better software developers, or at least I hope their opensource driver approach works because they have really let themselves down in this area.

Anyway, thanks for this - why ATI have keylogging and bugs such as this as part of their drivers I'll never understand. Just make the graphics card run!

oy, thats quite a relief. I'm just glad its catalyst and not something else. as long as they keep giving me pretty things to look at they can keep that squre there as long ast they want.

not that long ago I was scared when I first used drivers (forget which version had it first) that had the MOM.exe ... sick ppl naming those files i tell ya. you would think they would search virus databases and not name them the same to avoid FP readings and scaring the daylights out of their customers.
