White people to go extinct?

So, if you think about it, white people are only white because white people lived in the North of Europe where there is a lack of sunlight and UV.

Now that white people are living in more southern locations (like the USA), white people would naturally turn brown... after a few thousand years or so.

So, what do you think?

If you want to remain white, move to Canada? :sneaky:

:hmm:

Oh come on...

We're on to you now bub.

Well, eventually all humans will be brownish... and those theories were more to do with intermixing, but if you think about, we'd all eventually turn brownish, because who wants to live in Alaska?

A few thousand years? Would skin color change that quickly? I think there's a greater chance of more "interbreeding" so that skin colors start to average out.
And white isn't a species.

Maybe more like 10s of thousands.

Only if they interbred with people of other races. Sunscreen does a nice job of making up for any evolutionary disadvantages we have in regards to the added UV. Even if the parents have a great tan from the sun, their children will have the "default" skin tone.

There's still time to Capture White People and start a Breeding Program.

Hmmm that's true, I never use Sunscreen so I don't even think about it.

skin =/= species.

The human race will live on regardless of skin color anyways.

/failthread

Didn't you know, white = species in Arizona? :hmm:

Obvious is obvious, who said anything about species? Genetic traits can become extinct.

If anything people will get lighter skinned (save for racial "crossbreeding" or whatever) as technology advances. We spend less and less time outside as the years pass.

Me. I would love to live in rural Alaska. I'd move there tomorrow if I could still make what I do now.

Huh you didn't give much of an explanation to go with that link. Do you think that principle proves we're all gonna turn a shade of light brown in thousands of years or that there will always be a mix?

Honestly with that link you can defend either side, depending on where your bias lies.

Edit: Also, if your biggest concern about the far future is that there will be no white people and everyone is gonna have the same skin tone, you're doing it wrong. You should be concerned about how we will survive the robot uprising.

okay to oversimplify things enormously, assume skin color is controlled by one gene (it isn't really), and there are two different alleles for it in the human population, w and b.

People who are ww (the genotype) are white (phenotype), wb are brown and bb are black. The b allele far outnumbers the w allele, so most people are brown or black. This does NOT mean, however that white people will disappear, because the w allele will remain at some percentage. Things can change if there's selection for or against either allele or one of the phenotypes, but it might take a very long time, depending.

More likely to change skin color is interracial marriages . The USA is now #1 in that category. Report came out yesterday. As that continues the genes will intermingle . Wonder what traits will be the dominant in a few centuries ?
http://pewsocialtrends.org/pubs/755/trends-attitudes-interracial-interethnic-marriage
A record 14.6% of all new marriages in the United States in 2008 were between spouses of a different race or ethnicity from each other, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

That figure is an estimated six times the intermarriage1 rate among newlyweds in 1960 and more than double the rate in 1980.

Race, Ethnicity and Immigration: Of the 3.8 million adults who married in 2008, 9% of whites, 16% of blacks, 26% of Hispanics and 31% of Asians married someone whose race or ethnicity was different from their own.

For whites these shares are more than double what they had been in 1980 and for blacks they are nearly triple. For Hispanics and Asians, by contrast, these rates are little changed from 1980. High levels of Hispanic and Asian immigration over the past several decades helped drive both seemingly contradictory trends.
