White people, talk about your parents/culture

Stolen from dcdomain's thread.

I'll start first. My parents are both right-wing conservatives, my dad is practically a Rush Limbaugh zealot. Mom is conservative, just not as out-spoken as my dad. My dad grew up in Findlay, Ohio and is a huge fan of the Browns and Indians. On my school transcripts, my dad wanted me to say I'm a Native American because he says we belong to the "Wahoo Tribe." School and academics has always been a priority in the house, good grades are expected. But I'm not punished or anything if I screw up.

Parents really don't make me do anything, my dad wanted me to play baseball as a kid, which I did, but I quit because it was too boring. I play soccer and used to play hockey because I enjoy it, don't play any musical instruments. Never was forced to really do anything. I'm Christian, but by choice. We don't go to church or anything, I did go to Bible Camp over the summer as a cheap alternative to a day care when I was younger and just continued to go to it for ~5 years.

That's all I can say. Being white is great. However, I get labeled a lot by hypocrites. Like trying to start a "European Descendents Club," I figured we have like 50 Asian clubs, why not a white club. But the office didn't even listen to our idea (my friends and I thought of it) and practically called us skin-head NAZI's. Calling an African American "black" makes me racist, yet on every form I fill out, I'm called "white," etc. On some school-wide test they gave us (STAR9 for Public School kids in California), I crossed out each ethnic group and wrote their color next to them. Asians = yellow, Native Americans = tan, Indians = brown, etc.

That's about all, white people talk about your parents/culture.

Well, just like me, my parents don't have any culture. We've lived all our lives in Utah.

I'm not sure what you mean by "culture". We go about our business and pretty much ignore that which doesn't concern us.

3rd edit:

My parents are from Ohio, as am I. We go to church on sundays, eat dinner at the table together, I go to a catholic school. I'm not pressured to do well in school because I do anyway. My girlfriend is white, they don't care. My (white) cousin had a baby with a black guy. They were pretty shocked at first but now they don't care. Thats about it.

I'm your standard Mick-Kraut with some English and French to muddy up the water. Parents born in midwest, moved to California early in life and raised a family here. A little socially liberal, fiscally conservative.

I don't have white pride, despite the things it's probably gotten me over the years.

my brother is married to an indian girl and i have an asian g/f and my parents dont care at all...never even mentioned anything about it...

yep, as long as i didnt get into too much trouble i was fine...and even when i did get into a lot of trouble, i was pretty much ok to as long as i was headed down a good path for the future

edit:
my father puts down Native American because his side of the family came here before there was an america

How ironic that you reference yourself as white but complain at the same time for being called that. If you don't want to be called white, then tell people instead of whining about it in yet another racism rant thread.

MY dad is from a detroit ghetto. My mom is from the suburbs in New Jersey. They live (and I was raised) in a relatively conservative area of a very liberal community. My mom is fairly moderate, registered democrat. She was raised catholic but no longer attends church. My dad is a political and religious freak. By "freak" I don't mean that he's way off to the right or the left, but that he's off on his own tangent somewhere that no one else has ever heard of. Actually, politically, he's fairly close to libertarian, but as far as religion goes, he's way off on his own tangent. He doesn't attend church, but reads a lot of religious books (the bible, the torah, other jewish and probably muslim stuff, and books talknig aboutt he history of religion in the midlle east that propose some "interesting" theories).

Anyway, the neighborhood they live in is mostly white. Average cost to buy a house is about $550,000 now (they bought htier house for $265,000). It's pretty typical northern california.

I live 150 miles away in a less expensive area with crappier weather and no ocean. Eventually I'll move back when i can afford it.

I don't think he was complaining that he is referred to as "white".

WTF is this bullsh!t? If you live in a society, then you have culture. The reason you don't recognize it is because you see from the inside, while you are viewing all those other "cultures" from the outside.

My mother and father's side of my family moved to America in 1903 and 1912, respectively, from Scotland. My family has lived in Tennessee since then. My mother is a die-hard liberal, my father a die-hard conservative. Political discussions almost always turn into bloodbaths. As such, I hate politics as a whole.

I was expected to get good grades, and I always did, but that wasn't enough. I had to work for those grades, and because I was lazy and earned A's, it wasn't the same as being busy and earning A's. I was told that they were disappointed in me.

I'm very proud of my Scottish heritage. I feel that if blacks are called African American, I should be called a European American. The fact is we're all Americans, not (Inset Continent here)-Americans.

You might want to hook up with the ACLU about not being allowed to form a high school white person's club.

Southern.

Dad's family are farmers.
Mom's are miners.

My great grandmother was a "Daughter of the American Revolution", she apparently traced our heritage back that far.
I could call myself an Appalachian White, but don't as I'm pretty midwestern by anyone's standard.

He wasn't complaining about being called white, he was complaing that the government calls him white but he gets called a racist if he calls African-Americans "black."

I'm about as white as they get. 50% Ukranian, the other 50% is mixed European.

However, that's 100% genetic. Culturally, I'm Canadian - meaning I'm everything and nothing at the same time.

"Calling an African American "black" makes me racist, yet on every form I fill out, I'm called 'white,' etc."

If an African American person don't want to be called "black" then so be it.
If you don't want to be called "white" then please do let people know.

Otherwise all I gotta say to that is, STFU and stop whining.

P.S. I don't know of any government related form that has a "white" bubble only. If anything, "White/Caucasion-American"

Well, my dad goes to work and drives truck 5 days a week. When he's home he helps my mother with the Arabian Horse stable they run.

When they're not working, they're complaining about money or traveling to horse shows.

We don't talk about politics because we don't care (at least I don't). We don't vote.

We celebrate the basic holidays. My parents aren't too big on sports, though they like to watch football.

I don't know what kind of culture is evident in that.
