okay first off,
why anyone would refer to anything as "ghetto"? it's ridiculous, but that is besides the point. I am a trainer for nextel (not sure if i mentioned that before). One of the white male New hires in my class refered to a store in my town as "ghetto" of course the african americans in my class took offense to this (which they should), and were threatening to take him outside and get to the bottom of what he thinks ghetto is.
Think about what you say people. When you call a ran down, poor neighborhood/establishment "ghetto" what are you really saying? Think about it.
especially if i'm your suporvisor at that moment, i have better things to worry about.
Actually, ghetto refers to any area of a city occupied by a minority group, not necessarily African Americans, due to social, economical, or legal pressure. I lived in New York City, the Bronx and Harlem to be more specific, for 1 1/2 years. The Bronx was initially a ghetto for Jewish people. The northwestern and southeastern portions of the Bronx are still predominantly Jewish, and would therefore be referred to as Jewish ghettos. The reason the word has been taken as slang to refer to a run down area is, as far as I've been told, due in large part to ghettos, such as these in New York, that became run down and abandoned during the Great Depression. But that doesn't mean the the people are poor. People lived in ghetto's for more than just that reason.
However, ghetto should have no negative connotations. Living in Utah, you could call Provo a Mormon ghetto, since it's somewhere around 90% Mormon. But there is nothing rude about it.
