WASHINGTON ? Bowing to Republican pressure, President Barack Obama's administration signaled on Sunday it is ready to abandon the idea of giving Americans the option of government-run insurance as part of a new health care system. Facing mounting opposition to the overhaul, administration officials left open the chance for a compromise with Republicans that would include health insurance cooperatives instead of a government-run plan. Such a concession probably would enrage Obama's liberal supporters but could deliver a much-needed victory on a top domestic priority opposed by GOP lawmakers. Officials from both political parties reached across the aisle in an effort to find compromises on proposals they left behind when they returned to their districts for an August recess. Obama had sought the government to run a health insurance organization to help cover the nation's almost 50 million uninsured, but he never made it a deal breaker in a broad set of ideas that has Republicans unified in opposition.

So basically, we're going to give the insurance industry 50 million new customers. Instead of offering a public option that will help keep prices lower, we're just going to make insurance companies promise extra nice that they won't increase premiums arbitrarily, like they have the last 10 years to expand profits by 430%. If any of you think Obama isn't one of the most bought politicians in history you're deluded

Obama is trying to pin this on republican again. Democrat has control of both house and the senate. And the last I know, even if all Republican are against this, democrat have enough vote to push through any new bill.

The radicals don't have enough moderate votes to push it through as is, so compromise is made.

He lied to get into office and now you are surprised he has to backpedal due to lack of support from the common man? If liberals get upset it is only because they don't travel in the world of reality.

how is a public option a "radical" idea, radical (though normal by any other first world status) would be UHC.

Now lets see how the libs blame the GOP for this ;)

I'm sure they'll find a way.

Of course it's the GOP's and moderate Democrats' "fault." There's not enough support for this legislation. The system is working.

If I were Obama I would just disown the unpopular reforms and just take credit for whatever modest reforms are made.

Just sent another round of emails to my Senators, Obama, and the DNC advising them that if they don't pass a public option, then I'm staying home for the next few elections. If they can't even attempt an incremental reform, fuck them.

You do realize this only works when he pays lip service to some liberal idea like treating gays like humans while the "other hand" does nothing to that effect? Like when he appointed an oil lobbyist to run the EPA

Oh, you could start with a fearmongering campaign full of lies. "Pull the plug on Granndma" ring a bell?

This is what keeps pushing me away from the Republican Party. It's not just that the leadership is a bunch of lying and destructive slime balls -- both parties have that. It's that the party rank and file seem to celebrate the sliminess instead of being ashamed of it. You're proud of the way you drag America down.

liberals hate profits and people more successful than they are. I for one is happy to see a compromise being made instead of a health plan made by liberals who don't know how the real world really works.

Are you seriously suggesting that the democrats lob the same amount of slime as the republicans?

I guess he's forgotten the lies about how the GOP is going to take old people's SS (theyve gotten alot of mileage on that)...or how Bush stole the election from Gore in the courts...when in fact it was GORE who requested a recount in the courts (lol) it goes on and on. I was an active Democrat for 20+ years before I woke the fuck up and realized they are the most hateful slanderous party in America. Next to the KKK that is.

It just looks that way to you because you fear losing something to people you think are inferior. You just despise the part of yourself that was beaten to death in childhood because you cared.
